to mock foreign leaders or to promote his policies?
I'm mean, really? Your the supposed leader of the free world and you think it's appropriate to communicate by twitter?

I don't know...I resisted the lure of the twitter for a while, but have finally come to embrace it. I don't think the President is any more childish to use twitter than say the Pope or the Dalai Lama-both of which I follow on my twitter feed.

I find it childish of any politician to mock a foreign (or even domestic) leader publicly. That applies regardless on the politician's party, position or media platform.
I don't have an issue with politicians using Twitter or other social media to promote their desired policies of choice. The youth of today are increasingly absorbed in social media, and I believe that if a politician wants to reach out to that demographic and get the younger voters involved, they need to utilize social media. That's basic marketing 101 these days.
With all that said, I went to the President's Twitter account and didn't see anything that immediately looked to be mocking of a foreign leader. Can you provide an example?

Unless the tweets are signed BO, it is just an aide who writes tweets for him.

Where are the mocking tweets?
I have no issue with him using Twitter though. It is a huge part of life. I don't find it childish one bit.

I went back to the beginning of the month and not only hasn't he tweeted personally in April, every tweet made at that account is professional and/or informational other than the Easter Egg roll kick off. Even so, I don't think anything about twitter is childish, it's just the way the world is now. Didn't Rand Paul announce his Presidential candidacy via twitter? ETA: Sorry, Ted Cruz. Rand Paul's last tweet is him... mocking the President.

Leader of the free world? Do you consider The United States to be the only place in the world that is 'free'? Because that is the only part of the world he is the leader of. As a citizen of a country that I consider very free, I find it slightly arrogant to refer to YOUR leader as the leader of all of us. Because he is not Posting on Twitter being childish? It's the same comments he would make anyway, just a new format to do so in. Maybe people considered it childish when politicians first started to appear on TV...?

I follow the President on Twitter, and I haven't seen any mocking tweets. As far at it being childish, no, I don't find it so. It's just another way to communicate, and he's savvy enough to realize that it's a platform that a lot of young people use. Also, I've never seen him tweet anything (and I realize it's not really him tweeting) that wasn't already in the news somewhere else. He's just maybe trying to reach a different audience.

Twitter is a normal mode of communication in today's world. I have no issue with the president using Twitter, and I doubt you would, either, if the president were only Republican.
About mocking foreign leaders ... if 98% of the population doesn't get the mockery without having it explained to them, it's pretty freakin' subtle, isn't it?
Bibi Netanyahu has been very, and very publicly, disrespectful toward Pres. Obama. Rather than worrying that our leader is mocking him so subtly that hardly anyone even notices, I would think you'd take offense at the disrespect a foreign leader shows our president, especially one whom we send vast amounts of money and other forms of support to.

I looked at his twitter feed and didn't find anything that appeared to be mocking anyone. Maybe I didn't scroll back far enough? Do you have some examples?
I told my Member of Parliament off because he was making childish and personal attacks on the leader of another party. Some people really need to have better defined boundaries.
In this day and age, I would be surprised if a politician didn't have a twitter account. I'm just disappointed by the ones who can't see to manage them properly.

Yes it is appropriate to communicate by twitter.
I would be concerned if our leader *didn't* know how to use modern technology and modern communication.
No, it is not appropriate for a world leader to mock other world leaders. However, I do not see any evidence of that and you didn't provide any.

Oh ffs. Typical partisan bs to cry foul over something like that. Sorry I don't find that to be mocking a foreign leader. No matter who said it.

I do not find that to be mocking Netanyahu. And I wouldn't think it was if a Republican presidential Twitter account tweeted the same thing.
A leader's responsibility is to communicate in ways that reach their constituents. Like or not, Twitter is incredibly popular and it's many people's #1 source for news. It would be irresponsible for world leaders to ignore the changes in communication norms in our world.

No I don't find it childish for a world leader to use social media. It is not intended for children. Twitter users are supposed to be over 13.
I use twitter mainly for information, so for President Obama to use it to communicate with his constituents makes great sense to me.
Isn't the account The White house? So its non-partisan.. whoever is in office would be using that account?

Why wouldn't the President and the White House have Twitter accounts? Like it or not Twitter has provided one of the most efficient quickest way of getting information out to the masses. If your "outrage" is due to the article (that included the "offensive" tweet) Sarah posted then either you are reaching for a "gotcha" or bored.

Yes. i wouldn't say childish but I would say lacking in dignity.
Post-presidency, I have no problem w him (any him) utilizing social media on his own. While serving, I wish he wouldn't. I think it makes him seem ordinary, and while you are a sitting president, you are anything but ordinary.
And Twitter seems so mundane. Shouldn't the President have more important things to do than tweet?

Obama, and his entire staff, are anti-Semites of the highest order. They haven't even tried to hide how much they dislike Israel. You have to be willfully blind to not see it. They whole heartedly support the destruction if Israel. I'm ashamed of how they have treated bibi and Israel over the last 6 years. Deeply ashamed. So I cheer anything bibi has to say about Obama at this point - he has the right and Obama deserves every bit of it.

As to subject at hand - I don't find it childish to use it, it's the way of the world. But when the office of the POTUS uses it in a way that can be seen as mocking or rude, then yes, I have a problem with that. Once you take that oath, you are no longer a democrat or a republican, you are the president of all the people and you should be above the petty politics of division. Unfortunately, that is the only thing that Obama is good at - politics of division.
Know what I find really childish? Using the Easter prayer breakfast to chastise Christians, especially when you yourself held the exact same belief just a couple short years ago. All while refusing to chastise Muslims for the holocaust being committed against Christians and moderate Muslims in the Middle East.

I'm sorry, but that's an inaccurate and slanderous claim, along the same silly lines as Kanye West saying, "George Bush hates black people." It's just ridiculous. List of current and former Jewish members (some extremely close to the president) of the Obama administration.
As far as supporting the destruction of Israel goes, that is equally ridiculous. I don't think Pres. Obama has the same close relationship some other presidents have had, but he is a far cry from hating it. I am very supportive of Israel; I still find Netanyahu's behavior and policies to be reprehensible. You aren't convincing anyone with this extreme rhetoric.

I don't have any problem w/ the President using Twitter to communicate. I think it's an excellent communication tool for politicians and hats off to him for being one of the first politicians to fully recognize the potential of Twitter.
However, I do think that tweet had a sarcastic tone. I wouldn't mind if the President's office sent out a sarcastic tweet about some pork barrel issue, but I really do think this issue is so important (regardless of which side of the fence you are on) that sarcasm is not appropriate.

Mocking foreign leaders I would find to be weird. (I haven't looked at his twitter feed to see if he's done that, just responding). But tweeting? Have no issue with that. I get most of my news from Twitter these days. I don't have to watch commercials, can view it anywhere, can get it faster than it is on TV, and can get it from any source I want. I follow the Pope too. I think it's cool that he tweets. Seems like they are trying to communicate to a younger generation - or even just those of us that don't watch much TV.

No, I think it's more along the lines of your assertion that the clerk at Michael's putting a tiny decorative flag in a plastic bag at the check-out is UnAmerican, or that throwing out a tattered flag instead of giving it a ceremonial burial equals not supporting wounded soldiers. Dramatic much? This whole thread is once again, as per the OP's usual MO, much ado about nothing.
