Henrietta Lacks is? I had a conversation with a telemarketer that prompted this question.

I do. I read the book about her. She is a black woman that doctors experimented on instead of trying to cure her. The book is titled The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

Yes I do. I'm from Baltimore and she was the subject of much discussion during our tour of Johns Hopkins University. DD is interested in genetics and microbiology/vax issues. We were in a lab with a $2.7 million microscope when the subject came up.

I do now. Prior to reading the book several years ago I didn't. I suspect that for people who haven't read the book or work directly in that area of science it isn't a well known name.

Its really sad. Same with Georgetown University.

Though the disparity in care is what black people should take issue with i could not agree with you more i did google a bit and saw that there was a Supreme Court case involving a similar case - and it which the HeLa line was brought up. the SC ruled that discarded cells could be used without permission and for commercialization that bothers me - drs take what they deem necessary - decide they are finished with it - and it's then available not a lot of accountability i won't take away from the good works that came from Mrs Lacks - polio for one - but ugh...it just doesn't sit well

The doctors did NOT experiment on her instead of trying to cure her. The collection of her tissue and its subsequent use without compensation to the family is an extremely interesting discussion. One could even argue about the difference in care between African Americans in the south (or anywhere for that matter) during that era. But her doctors DID treat her and the collection of her cells and the subsequent use of them had absolutely nothing to due with the primary treatment of her cancer or her death.
