4/7 Morning Update Hungry Hungry Hip....errr Giraffe! Keepers report is that April has consumed all of last evening's grain offering, and continues to eat her hay. Udders are full, wax caps have reappeared (as they will come and go at times), and she is very much "herself". The new enrichment item (a newer puzzle feeder) has been added today after a quick tweak - which delayed its application yesterday. We will get to see the giraffes' response today! -------------------- All things April the Giraffe are found on her official site - anything else is likely NOT OURS! Remain vigilant - new stream of fakes and frauds seem to have hit. Find plush, clothing, Emojis, and Labor Alert text system at - www.Aprilthegiraffe.com ---------------------- Giraffe Factoid: When are Oliver and April's Birthdays? While we have a rough idea of their birth dates, we choose to celebrate them during our Park's Celebration of World Giraffe Day! This day is celebrated each year on June 21st, the longest day of the year to honor our longest necked animals! The effort and day was initiated by The Giraffe Conservation Foundation. We always celebrate this day at our Park on Father's Day to ensure families can enjoy and learn together! What a day it will be this year for Oliver: World Giraffe Day, Birthday, and first Father's Day! Photo Credit (we believe) Heather Ainsworth, New York Times First Kiss Allysa has reported that April has quite an appetite this evening! This is after a few days of picking at grain and hay. We have been told by other parks that mothers will sometimes feast just before the birth. Who knows and here is to hoping! Behavior was very typical at first, but shifted during Allysa's time with her. This is not a bad thing, just adds another piece to our puzzle. Weather has taken a horrible turn here. Rain and cold...and more rain. Mild flooding is occurring along the rivers, we will prep the ark. Giraffes will remain indoors until conditions are agreeable. ------ Today's Popular Comments & Questions We will install a giraffe yard, or Giraffe Encounter Deck cam once the park opens. At this time we have to focus on opening! Lots to do! The text alert system will not only provide texts but also links to exclusive web access for photo updates. You will receive texts from different numbers - do not worry they are all safe and the links are safe! Enjoy those photos! Some neat ones today!! Subscribe: aprilthegiraffealert.com/The naming contest will be posted after the birth of baby - we will not further jinx this process! The media has been denied access to the giraffe barn as we prepare and welcome final stages. We need no distractions. Interviews and content will return post birth. Boy she sure had everyone going a few minutes ago. Will be interesting to see how the rest of the night goes.
The feed is really sticking for me, is it for anyone else? Pretty sure it's my router but thought I'd ask just in case.

4/7 Evening Update April's Calendar Girl: April Keeper report remains relatively similar to morning! Great appetite and good nature! So, we thought we would share another Dr Tim Update: ------------------- Well Giraffe Fans, here we are approaching another weekend without a giraffe calf... <sigh> Tonight I decided to have a little pep talk with April to see if we could try to nail down a day, week, month or any sort of time frame... In this photo she is pretty much telling us what she thinks about that plan... On a more serious note, everything looks great with our big girl. She is acting completely normal. Her appetite has returned. She is still showing us all the signs that she is almost ready. There is no reason for worry about her or the calf's health. She just isn't quite ready yet... ----------------------- Today's top Comments & Questions - Yes! The animal adventure team will be at the Oakdale Mall tomorrow doing our annual spring baby animal meet & greet and photos. Baby chicks ducks goats and bunnies! Photos with our 5th year returning bunny - Benny! www.facebook.com/events/399783223728602/- Labor Alert & Baby Update subscribers - with test alerts done - you will not receive daily texts, instead we will reserve your exclusive content for significant updates or "can't miss" photos! Subscribe to be notified when the labor process begins and receiving photo updates during and after birth! aprilthegiraffealert.com/- The plush items sold out FAST! More will come soon, also the limited prints of "April in Waiting" will release likely this weekend! Again, limited numbers! www.wwsport.com/r/AprilTheGiraffe- The naming contest will not begin until we have a baby! Don't count your calves before they hatch! - Yes, we are aware of the malicious and irresponsible reporting of an online story from a TV Channel of the same network as a prior "whoops", that is once again (this is their second misstep), spreading and promoting rumors, suggesting we are lying and defrauding the world and the pregnancy is a hoax. Anyone with eyes and sense can see April is with calf. #Fakenews is REAL! --------------------------- Have a great evening and lets hope for a weekend addition to our giraffe family!

I'm convinced the whole thing is a hoax and we will never see a baby giraffe! I just read this article a few days ago but last month the Denver Zoo got a SURPRISE baby giraffe. (Warning, I think there is an autoplaying video included. Sorry.) His mom is the oldest giraffe at the zoo, and she was on birth control. (MSN had this on its homepage earlier this week like it was new, but when I searched for it now, the publication dates for all of the articles were March 1, but this one references April's live feed... I didn't realize everyone was watching her already BEFORE March 1...)

Do giraffes have a mating "season"? The Toledo zoo just announced they had a new baby giraffe born earlier this week (no videos to my knowledge but there are pics on their Facebook page). Seems like a lot of giraffe births, April is just ready yet.

Seems like a lot of giraffe births, April is just ready yet. No set mating season it usually takes place during rainy season. Here's a bit I found online... Giraffes don’t have a set mating season. Instead they have an estrous cycle, which is a lot like the human menstrual cycle (but with less blood and slightly different hormones). The male giraffes don’t just mate with the ladies all the time, so they generally try to find a way to determine is the lady is fertile. How, do you ask? Pee. The answer is always pee.

I'm not sure of your tone in your response I wasn't trying to tell you to search the thread first I just meant we talked about it somewhere, at sometime, and yes it's a fascinating story.

I haven't watched the other Giraffes giving birth, I'm hoping I catch April having her baby live but boy are the teasing me with the YouTube suggestions. Not sure why I don't want to watch the others, maybe I want to be surprised, lol. I did read the article link up thread, fascinating info about momma Giraffes. Had no idea I enjoyed watching, learning about Giraffes so much.

I'm sorry! No tone. It seemed like interesting info since April is dragging this out, but I really didn't want to post if I was repeating info (especially once I found out it was a month old news already!), but I have only popped in on this thread to look at the updates from time to time and haven't really followed, so I did a search on Denver, figuring someone would have posted the "where" if you had already talked about it. I thought I was being soooo smart, LOL. Anyhow, yes, it's very fascinating. I wouldn't have thought you could hide a baby giraffe for the last few months. Then again, there's a whole series called "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant," so I guess humans aren't the only ones who sometimes don't show.

I had almost forgot about Dobby :frown: so I'm glad you brought him up. I did a quick google to see how he was doing because it was looking dicey for him but I didn't find much. I didn't really search hard either though. The web is overloaded with April right now! She's just wanting all the attention, sashaying her bulging backside all around. Tease!

4/8 Morning Update Allysa reports April remains the same as evening prior. Not much other to report on that front. She is big, full of milk, baby is kicking, just not coming out! The giraffes are really enjoying their new enrichment item! We have some fun photos of the enrichment toy use and April meeting a mini-Geoffrey the giraffe - to our Labor Alert Text Subscribers today! Want to enroll? aprilthegiraffealert.com/Artistic Prints of "April in Waiting" should hit the store today and there is rumor of new plush coming. Giraffe Factoid: Super Mom As we have discussed, giraffes can defend themselves with the power of their kick - which is bone crushing to predators such as lions, hyenas, etc. Mother giraffes, will attempt to stand over their calves during attacks. Thwarting off attackers with her deadly kicks. Photo Credit: Andrew Thayer - Pressconnects

....an hour later, still offline. They have an event off-site today that many of the staff are participating in, so while I'm sure April is being monitored by a staff-person, there may not be anyone there who is familiar with how to re-set the feed. Or it could be an ISP issue. Apparently they're in a fairly rural area that is known to have spotty service.
