Prayers for all involved. It's heartbreaking!
A friend's niece and her husband were at the concert. He was shot in the leg. Thankfully he will be fine.

DH's great-niece surprised her hubby with a 30th birthday trip there. They looked SO happy & the concert was the best part for them. They are safe and fine. Luckily, they left the concert early, but I think they've been on lock-down.......... Praying for their safe return to FL when they're able to leave. What a memory

I have since learned that a fellow young breast cancer survivor was shot in the face. She is in critical but stable condition at this time.

So many Peas have been touched by this, I'm so sorry for the loss and grief that has touched you all.
For those who are facing the loss of a loved one, I am so saddened for you. May your memories help at this difficult time.
For those who know someone who has been injured, may they have a speedy recovery and the comfort of good friends and family to help them deal with this trauma.

Fully automatic weapons are not legal. He probably modified his semi-automatic weapons which he may or may not have obtained legally. Right, so how are lax laws to blame for this? It's not as if he fashioned them out of rocks and sticks. The sale of some OTC cold meds is heavily regulated because someone may use them to make meth. The sale of fertilizer is heavily regulated because it might be used to make bombs. Here you have a commodity that starts out being deadly and people throw their hands in the air and ask "What could we have done?" I just don't get it.

I just don't even know what to say anymore. I can no longer make sense of who and what we are as a country. Evil people like this do not define who we and what we are as a country. The everyday people who filled up their own vehicles full of bleeding victims to get them to the hospital because there weren't enough ambulances define who and what we are as a country. The people who shielded others with their own bodies to protect them from bullets define us. The hundreds of people who lined up around the block and waited for hours to give their own blood to help others defines who and what we are as a country. We will not let this evil define us.

I just have to say that I'm proud as hell of my city. The sheriff's 2nd in command essentially told the media last night that they've been inundated with so many donations that they don't even know what to do with it all. They don't even want people to keep donating blood in the volume they are right now because there is such a huge supply from donors (they are asking for people to consider donating as recovery efforts continue because blood does have a shelf life, so donating in a few days, next week, in a few weeks, etc helps to ensure donations won't be wasted). Hospitals are receiving so many food donations (a lot of restaurants have been feeding everyone they can) that they've had to request donations be limited to non perishable items. A relatively new ice cream business had an event scheduled yesterday at Mandalay Bay and were left with tons of ice cream they couldn't use since the event was canceled, so they took it to one of the United Blood Services locations and fed donors waiting in line. It doesn't reverse the tragic loss of life or heal the injured, but it is such a fantastic reminder that there is still so much good in the world and people are doing whatever they can to help, so much so that supplies are in surplus. #vegasstrong is right.

I agree with you. I will not define my country by the acts of violence and evil among us. It's the people that help and give that define this country.

We will be in Vegas for a Navy reunion in two weeks and are going to donate blood when while we are there. I agree with the bolded.

we have to figure out what is wrong with us as a country that we aren't taking care of our mentally ill people AND we allow them to purchase massive quantities of guns. Well someone did try to stop the mentally ill from purchasing them but unfortunately the next person in line didn't like that idea and he revoked it in February. LINK
The rule in question does NOT, in fact—fact being the key word here—“keep guns from the mentally ill,” and repealing it will not allow the mentally ill access to firearms. This is a falsehood, one that would require roughly 3.5 seconds of fact checking to disprove. Not being able to handle your finances is not a measure of whether you should be allowed to protect yourself or not. They are very different determinations. Individuals should be determined to be a risk to themselves and others, not a blanket determination by the Social Security Administration, which does not allow due process. In the same way the No Fly List is run. You don't know you're on it until you try to fly, it's full of mistakes (babies are listed, people working in Homeland Security are on it, right name, wrong person, threats to be informants or be put on the list, etc), and a court has ruled the process for getting off the list as unconstitutional. There's a reason the ACLU and dozens of mental health groups have urged the repeal of the law Obama put in place.

Not sure whether to start a new thread but the most intriguing fact I have seen mentioned about the otherwise seemingly "normal" shooter is that his father was a notorious bank robber, mostly a career criminal who was a "diagnosed" psychopath who also enjoyed bridge and ran a bingo parlor. Was on the FBI's Most Wanted list.
His son ends up committing the worst mass shooting in US history and was a high stakes gambler.
I read a few articles about the father that mentioned that people either loved him or hated him. Makes me suspect an actual pathologic personality disorder. Can't help but wonder the same about his son. Even if it the case, it's the sort of thing that I think he would have still be able to get away with getting a license had there been some sort of mental illness law in place.

My husband and I are both psychologists and we were just discussing an hour ago that we won’t be surprised if a tie between his motivation for this event and his bank-robbing father is discovered.

I thought it was quite interesting his brother kept talking about how normal and ordinary he was...like having a psychopath on the FBI's most wanted list is no big deal right?? But I guess if you grow up and daddy is a bank robbing con man who escapes prison it is your "normal" right??

I feel as if the emphasis in the questions the brother was probably asked was likely political ideology, trying to link him to white supremacists, ISIS, antifa, anti-Trump, pro-Trump, really anything.
I am surprised there has been little from people who knew him, but perhaps I just have not seen that coverage. I suspect that even if it is that he is "just" an outright psychopath, there will be continued attempts to link him to something by those on the fringes (far right, far left).

Each day it seems there are more and more things that break my heart. My heart goes out to all the victims and their families, as well as the city of Las Vegas. To those peas that have friends and family involved, I am so sorry and my prayers are including you.

God bless the Las Vegas Metro Police Dept, and SWAT teams. And all the other first responders, and the off-duty ones, and the retired ones. And the doctors and nurses.
