He went in to the office today and then all the NYC things just hit the fan. He'll be working from home for the forseeable future. His job is fairly secure, he's been there only a year, however his boss is out on maternity leave so he's doing 2 people's work. He's sent me texts with photos of his TJ's this afternoon on his way home. There is no food. And I mean FOOD, not TP and paper towels. ATMs are getting cleaned out. Yet, I offered to bring him to Seattle on a red-eye tonight (before travel to WA state gets restricted) but he said it would be too hard to do his job with the 3 hour time difference so he's staying put. KIDS. Mama is worried, and I am not typically a worrier. No food at Trader Joe’s? Wow. I’m glad his job is secure, and I understand your worry. I hope he stocked up and will be able to bunker down at home for a good period. Will definitely be thinking about him! I’m almost surprised my mom hasn’t requested we come stay there and she’s only 2 hours away. He couldn't stock up, there was literally no food :/ Lemme get on my phone and I'll post a couple of the photos he sent me.

Is there grocery delivery in NYC? You can send him some things from Amazon Prime Pantry. I think they work with Whole Foods as well so he can get some fresh food.

This is from the TJs in SoHo. He’s going to check things out closer to his apt. Won’t let me attach more than two. This is a LOT worse than it’s been in Seattle. ETA: I’m sorry these are posting sideways. No idea why. Attachments:

I did just send him 2k so he can get to the ATM and get some cash out, while still having enough in his account for his bills. If anyone (throughout the US) has the ability to withdraw $$ to have cash on hand, this is a good time to do so.

Honestly, I thought there was a chance we’d see this, but not for another month or two. That’s when I thought supply chain issues would really become obvious. Not based on any real knowledge, obviously.

Broadway is shutting its doors until April 12. The people with upcoming theater tickets in NYC should hopefully be covered now.

ETA: I’m sorry these are posting sideways. No idea why. Whoa, those are crazy pictures! I shopped at our TJ and Albertsons today and everything was stocked except for hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol. Plenty of TP and paper towels if needed. We are Eastern WA. Both had normal amounts of people shopping and we even have a winter storm coming tomorrow. I wonder if it's just the amount of people who live in the area and not enough stores? So the few stores there are, are wiped out because too many people shopping at once. Is it normally like that in NYC when bad weather hits?

At this point the people who don’t cancel their travel plans may have the decision made for them - as so many places shut down.

A lot of it has to do with it being NYC and the size of the stores and number of shoppers each one has. He says that with an impending storm the stores are wiped out, but in his 8 years living there he's never seen anything to this degree.

Hilton just announced they are allowing guests to cancel previously booked reservations, even those that were non-refundable. I’m trying to keep a mental list of companies like this so when I have use of their services in the future I can patronize them. But I don’t remember anything so I suppose I should write it down! Yes, it’s the right thing to do but I know everyone won’t.

We've canceled our trip to Peru. Got a credit for future flights and hotel stays so not exactly a refund, but we do plan to reschedule the trip. No problem cancelling one of our planned excursions, but the 2-day tour of the Sacred Valley and Machhu Picchu is non-refundable. I'm going to keep calling to see if things get more flexible, or if they will at least credit us for future use. It wasn't cheap. But if that's the only money we lose on it, we'll be better off than many. What made you change your mind out of interest? If you don't mind saying. Peru has started putting foreign visitors from China, Italy and Iran in mandatory quarantine. It isn't hard to imagine a similar scenario for US visitors if the numbers start exploding here. Also, they've started to close schools, which means that museums and attractions are next.

Apparently Delta Air is overwhelmed. I received an email from them tonight that said in part “ ...our teams are focused on first addressing the needs of our customers whose travel is in the next 72 hours, as well as those who have been impacted by the US government-issued travel restrictions between the US and Europe...those who do not have travel in the next 72 hours to wait and contact us closer to your trip.”
I’ve been holding off contacting them as I’d prefer they cancel my flight on the 26th so I can get my money back vs me canceling and getting a voucher/credit. Guess I’ll be holding off for a while longer. Boy I feel for everyone dealing with the fallout from travel restrictions (amongst all the other people dealing with other aspects of COVID19).

MichyM I know you want to get it resolved but I understand the position they’re in right now, I bet they appreciate customers like you with an understanding attitude. I think a lot of people in retail & service professions are probably dealing with the same thing, people are anxious and scared and that often translates to aggression and being unpleasant.

We postponed our DisneyWorld trip yesterday. We were scheduled to fly from Phoenix to Orlando on Saturday. My work was getting crazy though so we weren’t sure if the time was right. After we postponed our trip to the fall, the day after, Disney announces the DisneyWorld park will close on Sunday the 15th for the rest of the month Crazy to see what’s happening but makes the decision we made to postpone our trip feel better when the park closes the day after you decide you aren’t going. I never thought I’d see DisneyWorld close, but here we are. Now this means I may have to get house and yard work done!

DisneyLand closed first starting on Saturday the 14th for the rest of the month. Later in the evening, DisneyWorld and universal Orlando announced they are closing Sunday the 15 for the rest of the month. We got most of our trip rescheduled, but it was still a bit of a bummer.

And they are suspending all outgoing cruises in the next day or so. I'm at Disneyland right now, you'd never know there is a health issue going on except everyone is taking forever to wash their hands and everyone has hand sanitizer they use constantly. We go home saturday and i'm glad.

Exactly. But you know a lot of people won’t see that. And I’m not being all judge-y,. I was initially a bit short with the hostess last night due to some emotional anxiety and had to go back and apologize a few moments later. She was very gracious about it but they were severely understaffed and she didn’t need my shit on top of that.

Ugh, we are having an issue with the your we booked for Ireland. We expressed our concern when flights from Europe were being banned and then the next morning saw that Ireland had closed all schools, universities, and tourist attractions. All we asked was whether or not we could postpone, rather than cancel. This is a U.S. based your company. There response to us was "You're Americans, you won't have any trouble getting in or out of Europe." WTF, that is absolutely the wrong answer. And they didn't address at all the fact that all tourist locations are closed. What do they think we are supposed to do while we are there. Grrr. I'm going to be hopping mad if we lose all of our money on this. It's a bundle that includes airfare, car rental and B&Bs.

Well thankfully my daughter’s Costa Rica trip is cancelled. I’m hopeful we can get a refund. Initially the tour company was offering to reschedule or credit vouchers, neither of which we really wanted. However, now the Canadian government is advising against all nonessential international travel and the tour company has cancelled or postponed all tours, so we should be able to make a travel insurance claim.
Her school closed today as well.
My parents are trying to come home to Canada from their winter home in California now, about 5 weeks earlier than planned.
Weird times we are living in!

Well, I originally said we were still planning on our Disney vacation in April (13 of us!) but as of today, we have re-booked to September. It was just cutting it too close for us... with them being closed until the end of the month, what if they don't re-open as planned? My Dad is mid-60s and he's been a nervous nelly all week and wasn't too keen on everyone flying anyway. We can all breathe a sigh of relief now that it's re-booked for Fall!
