I work in a grocery store No Frills.
Yesterday a co worker came up to me and asked if I would take a customer not wearing a mask. T and P both did not want to take her which is their right for a safe work environment. Someone was on break and we have one person who stays at self checkout. The lady had a full cart. So I said yes. I did not realize she would be having a young boy with her. A boy who would not stay still. A boy who had a transformer toy which he took all around my area making noises without a mask on. One time the mom asked him to stay still so as to not spread germs. I struck up a conversation with him about Transformers (Bumblebee is my favourite) in hopes he would stay still. Nope. So as she packed and I couldn't call for another customer, I sanitized everything.
Nope. Never again. She can haul her overflowing cart to the self check out next time. I felt so uncomfortable after this. The new variant is loose in my province. Our numbers went over 1000 cases a day which is a big deal for us (Ontario, Canada). I just saw in the news another province New Brunswick, is now requiring proof of vaccination for grocery store shopping. They are a small province. This has never been done before so it must be concerning for them.
Stay Safe everyone.

I’m sorry you were in this situation especially since he sounds under 5 which means you know he’s not vaccinated.
You are the only one who can decide what you’re comfortable doing and it’s almost impossible to predict people’s behavior. Does your store provide masks for people who may have forgotten and don’t want to wait for a cashier who is comfortable with their open faces?

It’s such a shame that mandates aren’t nationwide. Los Angeles requires proof of vaccine AND masks (city, not county). But masks are worn by almost everyone. I was at Home Depot yesterday and one guy wasn’t wearing a mask and was asked to leave when he couldn’t produce one. I wanted to clap but my DH stopped me.

Stories like this make me so glad I live somewhere that mask mandates in stores are still happening. Yes, it’s been a pain to wear them, especially if I’m out shopping for a longer time, but I’ve survived so far. Gorcery stores, along with pharmacies are the two places we don’t have a vaccine mandate as well, which I understand as people need food and medicines.

I feel like we are living in completely different worlds sometimes.
No one wears masks here. No mask mandates. No one asks about your vax status. No showing your papers anywhere.
I saw Hamilton last week with 4,000 of my closest friends. No showing anything to get in.
I only even think about Covid when I read threads on here.
And you know what? It’s fine. I haven’t gotten it. I don’t know anyone who’s had a serious case of it or had lasting effects from it or has died.
It’s lovely to not be afraid all the time 🤷🏻♀️

Exactly how many friends do you have? The funny thing about COVID is that you might have had it and do t know. You might even have it right now. We’ve all repeated the words ‘asymptomatic’ to you, but you clearly don’t care about your fellow humans. Must be great to go around life so selfishly. And the rest of us aren’t afraid, we’re just considerate and caring individuals.

Not to mention insensitive AF. Just because you haven’t had it or known anyone who died doesn’t mean it hasn’t or won’t happen. 🤦🏻♀️

I don’t fight with employees about masks or throw fits about them or anything like that. But if they aren’t required I don’t get being mad at people who don’t wear them. If someplace says they require them and they’re actually enforcing it, I’ll wear one. I’ve been to lots of places lately (like National Park visitors centers and the ferry to Fort Sumter) where their website says they’re required and there’s a sign that they’re required, but then no one (including park rangers) is wearing them, so I don’t either.

I wouldn't take the risk that I could be asymptomatic and give it to someone else. I'm not just protecting myself. My state is mostly masked and I feel much better knowing that. As a high risk person I can't stay home forever. I need some semblance of normal, after staying home for 14 months. Wearing my mask will help keep me safe and it might keep you safe, too. I love the theater. Dh and I were just lamenting that we can't go to a concert or musical right now. That's OK. I don't want to go the hospital either.

I live in an area where mask mandates haven’t been in effect for quite a while. Our numbers are extremely low. I work in a school o over 800 students where masks are optional. We haven’t had a single student or staff member sick with the original virus or any of the variants.
If you live in an area where transmission is high, I totally support the mask mandates. In the case of my particular location everyone does what they are comfortable with and it’s working for us.

I feel like we are living in completely different worlds sometimes. No one wears masks here. No mask mandates. No one asks about your vax status. No showing your papers anywhere. One thing about this comment is that I think many of *are* living in entirely different worlds. My best friend lives in an area where no one is masking or changing behavior or procedures in stores. This isn’t a small place and their numbers *are* going up. I guess people just don’t give a fuck? The other day I mentioned “remember when COVID first started and it was like a ghost town? no one on the roads” She said that never happened. Not for one day or week did anything change. Just chatting not even about COVID things come up that reveal just how different that atmosphere is. She shops at night when fewer people are at the store for example bc no one is wearing a mask. And I’m shocked bc she’s not being hyperbolic, NO ONE. That would be unthinkable where I live. Employees always have masks and 95% of customers do as well. We need a national response (really a global one) but it’s a good reminder to me how that is hard when the culture is so so so different in some places that we can’t even imagine how other people are living.

Why was she allowed in the store, let alone being served through a cash?? I just got croissants at my favourite cafe and they had a big sign up saying they were being harassed and intimidated (masks and vax required) and now had a security camera as a result. I thought the city I live in was better than that, but apparently not. I went to a neighbourhood outdoor concert last night (how you know we're Canadians lol - going to an outdoor concert in -5) that required masks and nearly half the people took their mask off. So frustrating. I didn't realize NB is requiring vaccination for grocery shopping. My relatives are there and a few aren't vaccinated, so I wonder how they'll manage.

Yea, there was a thread earlier about finding out if your hairstylist is vaxxed. That’s unthinkable to me. My kids and I went for haircuts on Monday. Not one customer or stylist in the salon wore a mask. Not one stylist had a vax card on display. No one asked or talked about the vax.

She should try telling that to the loved ones of any of the 700K+ people who have already died. I bet they would have something to say about that. Our numbers here in MN have been rising again in spite of the fact that almost 65% of all eligible people age 5+ in my state are fully vaccinated and over 70% have had one shot. It’s closer to 93% for people over 65. I’m going to continue to wear a mask when I’m out anywhere in public where people gather indefinitely. DH and I both got our boosters this week and DD (11) got her second shot yesterday. People who refuse to believe Covid is still a thing are going to keep this crap mutating forever. It’s so damn frustrating.

Mask wearing here is almost non-existent among white people and Hispanics (exceptions are elderly people who appear to have ongoing health issues), about 100% amongst Asians, and most but not all Black people.
None of my patients are masked unless they're in common areas or being transported. I don't wear a mask to the store or any other place unless it's required. I only wear it at work, and if I'm at the desk, it's around my chin because I'm tired of 13 hours of masks and sinus drainage.
The idea of not checking out an unmasked person is a little foreign to me at this point.

Just to clarify as I live in New Brunswick - Our new winter plan comes into effect tonight in level 1. This level is not much different than our current yellow alert level. Masks are mandatory in all indoor public spaces and in outdoor spaces if physical distancing cannot be maintained. Business/retail can CHOOSE to either open with physical distancing OR proof of vaccination for all vaccine eligible patrons. Restaurants are the exception…patrons must show proof of vaccination.
How did this person get in without masking?

I’ll agree that hearing of places where people refuse to be near anyone without a mask is a bit foreign to me. I was like that last spring, at the start of this all. But at this point I don’t know of a single place (outside of some medical offices) where masks are required. I also don’t know of a single, local place with a vaccine mandate. The only place I’ve been asked if I’m vaccinated is work and it’s not required, it’s for quarantine purposes. All of those precautions just aren’t being done around here. What *is* happening around here is hospitals overflowing with unvaccinated people. Death tolls rising daily.
Personally I’m trying to make an effort to stop caring about other people more than they care about themselves. I’ve done my part, I’ve been vaccinated and boostered. Ds11 got his first shot and will get his 2nd before Christmas. I’ll follow quarantine and testing protocols as required by the health department when necessary. But beyond that I’m choosing to put my trust in science and go on about my life. My biggest fear is no longer COVID, it’s needing hospital care but not being able to get it because of too many stupid selfish people. Unfortunately I cannot control that.

There are definitely bubbles out there. I live near the edge of two opposing bubbles - Southern California / OC and LA counties. Sometimes it is truly like living in different worlds. In OC I’ve had restaurant workers and servers with no masks / indoor meetings maskless / very few masks outdoors. In LA county masks everywhere - one seen people on street corners alone/ all indoor spaces/ temperature checks/ showing my ‘papers’ etc. It seems like you can almost tell where someone lives based on their mask wearing habits.
