Morning pokeys! I'm on my last page of my 2017 december daily! Came up to post an edit on my trimmer review (bad news) so thought I should say "hi y'all!" Last night, I thought i'd take a little break from my DD album, and get my 29-4-29 challenge done for Wednesday (Not procrastinating - not me!) But when I tried to shift gears from the 6x8 pocket type project on to a regular 12x12, I couldn't do it! ARGH! So now I'm working to get these 2 pages done so I can then really shift gears back to "normal", and make a page to photograph before the sun sets today... Nothing like a deadline to stifle creativity, right? In other news... Last year (as in March 2023 - we have to put in vacation requests for June thru June annually, and they have to be in by March of the first year. TMI I know, but it's a frustration for me as how on earth can you guess what the family will be able to do over a year ahead???), I booked Feb. 19-23 off for a possible trip. It's "Spring Break" for the uni kids here, so I thought the family could go away. Turns out, DD is in co-op, not classes, so she's not actually available. But DH and I thought we would still go away, maybe a sun destination. Then DH got a different job at work, and wasn't sure if HE could get away. So we couldn't book. And by the time he did know he could have the week, the availability for our dates was poor and expensive. Part of the extra expense is because it's Spring Break for the uni kids and the airlines know it. Flying to California (another option) was going to be over $1500 EACH. gramma - DH found a couple of cruises that would fit our dates/prices, but when I added in the cost of flying to Florida and a hotel to bookend the cruise...yikes. Long story short - we're driving to Washington DC Saturday for a week. I'm quite excited to explore a new city with all the history, good food and museums! Unfortunately, as a Canadian we can't get in to tour the White House or Pentagon (the first was exciting for me, the 2nd for DH, we're both disappointed). And the weather here next week is supposed to be crappy but quite pleasant in DC so Who here can give me some tips or recommendations?

kitbop - we really enjoyed the FDR memorial. The 911 memorial at the Pentagon (open access - not inside) was very moving. We wished we had had longer at the Holocaust musuem. I especially liked the Korean War Memorial - my dad served in Korea as well as WW2 - it was very well done and for all the UN troops not just US. You'll be there a little early for cherry blossums unfortunately - they are more March into early April. Smithsonian musuems are all free but they may still be doing timed entry so if you're thinking about them - check on that in advance. my kids used the buses/metro this summer in DC with no problems - we were with a tour group when I went so didn't.

kitbop I second the Korean War memorial. Also the WW2 and Lincoln memorials. We were only there for 2 days when we went so we missed a lot!! We did take a bus tour that hit a lot of the highlights but only as a drive by. My adult kids went a few years ago and said that the Smithsonian is a 2 day thing. You will find many little hidden memorial sites as you walk through the grounds. And you will walk - a lot. We were lucky enough to be able to tour the White House one morning. Then in the afternoon we went to Mt. Vernon. It was an eerie feeling of then and now. I was also taken aback by the size of the buildings - huge!! Enjoy - have a great trip!

Happy Valentines Day, Pokeys! I made some cards with my students: pre-made Michaels bases, washi, glitter paper, a couple heart punches, stickers. It was fun for those who took part, but not everyone's cup of tea. We're doing a potluck lunch. I'm not sure if people are running late preparing their food (only 4 in class so far)or if they're not coming at all. We'll see. grammadee I hope you have a wonderful trip. What days are you away? kitbop have fun. I love a roadtrip. We're traveling to my mom's this weekend since it is a long weekend here. I have all of next week off, too, but DH doesn't. Mom is officially moving out of her house and into an apartment. She's in no rush to sell her house, though, so we can do a gradual move to the new place and then deal with the stuff that won't fit. I love that XO paper Linda. I think I might have had a sheet of that in the past? Our bathroom reno is finished (mostly)! We got a tub a few inches wider than standard and it is so nice and roomy. We just need to figure out storage. For now we'll use our old cabinet until we figure it out.

Thanks, justjac . Happy Valentines Day to you, too! Have a wonderful visit with your mom and family. And YAY for finished bathroom reno's! We are leaving this afternoon for Nisku. Will stay there tonight then board plane late tomorrow morning. We have a layover in Toronto and will arrive in Orlando after 10:00pm tomorrow evening. We fly back on the 23rd. James is joining us Friday afternoon and will be there until Monday afternoon--needs to be back in class in Washington DC Tuesday morning.
LOVE to all the Pokeys!

kellyr21 - yay for painting! I'm about 3hrs or so north of Orlando/Disneyworld - it's been years since I've been (2009) although we do usually stop at Disney Springs/Downtown Disney anytime we are in Orlando due to the Lego store and a nice fish and chips place - but we haven't been even there since pre-covid joyfulnana - I hope you're okay - worried with the news reports. Praying for the victims

Hey guys. We are all OK. DS2 works at a pizza shop on the route, but at the opposite end of the shooting. Rudy and his mom were at the parade. Fairly near the shooting, close enough to have heard some of the shots and then see a rush of people telling them to run. They had walked to the parade from the house of a friend. Rudy's mom said they didn't know what was happening, so they took a different route back that was twice as far. Cody said Rudy was mostly scared about all the people running toward them, but seemed ok otherwise, so far. Man I hate this world our kids have to navigate. 22 victims, 11 were children ages 6-16. 9 of the children had gunshot wounds, and will make a full recovery. The other injuries were from the crush of people running away. 2 deaths so far. There are 3 people in custody, and we haven't heard anything about a motive yet. In the beginning it sounded like an argument between a couple of people, but I'm not sure that's going to be the case. I'm so stunned and sick and sad. We went from a huge celebration to an immediate panic and ruin of the day. Things feel heavy and somber. I can't believe it. You are probably going to hear very often "This is not Kansas City" and I don't know how to explain it, but it's not. It's not the spirit of Kansas City anyway. I've always been soooo proud of our Championship sports parades. They are always just fun, and happy with no drama. We don't set cars on fire and tear things up when our teams win, we are just super happy. And now this. It's really surreal. Linda , kitbop , and gramma called, and I'm very grateful, thank you, you really helped lift my spirits!

I hate it too. And I know it's so naive to think something like this can't happen here, but it sure took me and this whole city by surprise.
And I feel petty, but I'm so mad. Those guys worked so hard to bring back to back Superbowl wins to this city, and that's tarnished now.
As DS1 put it, "welp, we'll be on Philip Defranco tonight" :/

I'm so sorry the fun was utterly ruined joyfulnana My first thought was of you and Rudy, and thank you for putting my mind at ease so I can go to bed! and the victims obviously, but my secondary thought was "see, this is why we can't have nice things". Most people are good but those few, sigh. Do you think this is why we love our animals? They're incapable of any of this human nonsense...trustworthy and safe.

joyfulnana, in all the hubbub of DH's surgery, I didn't even hear of the shootings in your city until very late last night. I am so sorry that some worthless person(s) ruined the day for everyone. I'm glad to hear that you and yours are safe. I heard Claire McCaskill (?) give the most wonderful description of Kansas City and the wonderful people who live there. It made me want to visit, so I hope the city doesn't absorb the blame for someone's ruthlessness. DH's surgery went well. He began to hurt a lot on Sunday and would get sharp pains in the site. We were hoping that the cancer was was not eating into the nerve. By the time we got him to surgery yesterday he was really miserable. In all his cancer removals he has never had pain prior to the surgery. They were able to cut it out, much bigger than they anticipated, but spared the nerve and it seems intact. It took them longer than anticipated because of where it was. They were able to close it without a skin graft, which made him happy. They also saw a good sized lesion on his hand as we checked in and decided to do that also while he was under anesthesia. He was pretty "out of it" all day yesterday, but is up and perking today. He's supposed to keep ice on it most of today, but he has already wandered out to the shop. "Just to look around," he says! MEN! grammadee, I hope you have a great time. I love Disney World! I also love scrapping Disney pages. They are my very favorite! kitbop, DC is one of my favorite places. I could spend days in all the Smithsonians. I had a friend and cousin killed in Vietnam and was happy to make tracings of their names on the VN memorial. The city has such rich heritage and is so interesting. I hope you have a great time. Linda, I love the documented genealogy in your pages. What a rich heritage Scott has. It makes me sad when soldiers are all just buried together in unmarked graves, but I guess that's the best they could do in war. My grandfather was stationed in France as a medic during WW1. He stayed after the war with the assignment to bury the dead. War is so terrible. Thanks for sharing your pages here. Love the photo of DS getting his garden ready. I love the border of plants you have used across the page! Great page. kellyr21, I am excited to hear about your big painting. You are painting flamingos? Wow, that sounds ambitious. Keep us informed on how it is going. Has your rain stopped. We are getting snow today, but I feel like winter is coming to an end. We were in the high 40's yesterday so it's nice to have warmer days occasionally. gramma, thanks for the call. It had been a lo-o-ng day! I'd better go check on DH. Who knows what he may be trying to do next!!

nylene - thank you. I finished another writeup today so hopefully will get that page done tonight. I'm so sorry that your DH was in such pain before the surgery. I hope the recovery goes smoothly and he doesn't over do things.

nylene - thank you for the update! I'm glad it's over and that no grafting was needed. I'm so glad they found it and got him in so quickly before the nerve was involved - sounds like it was close. I hope you are OK too - trying to deal with him and your shoulder and all, you must be exhausted today. grammadee - have a MAGICAL time! Please come home with thousands of pictures so you and I can commiserate on how to start scrapbooking them!

Hi Pokey's. grammadee have so much FUN! kitbop enjoy your time away! nylene I'm so happy they got it all and he didn't need a skin graft. And is already perking up. I hope you are getting enough rest too. @homechoolmum those little garden embellishments are the cutest! We're still learning about what happened yesterday. One fatality, not two. There should have been none. It was a couple of guys probably drunk and arguing. So it wasn't an "intentional" mass shooting. Which doesn't really make it better. Things are somber here and angry. Almost everyone has been released from the hospital. I know lots of you are busy, but is anyone interested in having a crop tomorrow night?
