How do we know they did nothing for the girls?
CNNI read this op ed earlier in the day. The woman who wrote it seemed to have done her homework. Given the detail of the chain of events it would appear nothing was done for the girls. When I read it this morning I was disgusted by the actions of the father and the fact so many were willing to hide what happened. I believe it's called the good old boy system. Edit again. I tried to get the link to work and I failed so I give up. The article/opinion outline the lengths the father went to hide what happened instead of doing the right thing to protect all of his children. Worth a read.

Whatever they did or didn't do for the girls at the time, I hate to think what all this coming to light is doing to them... If some of them truly don't remember much or have healed in there own way, this circus has to be having an effect...
You can't talk about the assailant and those who covered up for him without the victims feeling talked about... Doesn't matter if you don't identify them (in any way), or as in this case, they're partially identified (by their relationship to the assailant, as his sisters)...
For all the talk about protecting the victims, no one bothered to protect their identities by not saying (and constantly repeating), that they're his sisters... I get that because of their public positions on family/politics who he assaulted is relevant (their judgements about who makes a safe/appropriate family), but then victims should be protected...
Sets a horrible example of how the victims of 'celebrities' are able to be treated... I'd hate for any family member of a personality fear going to the police because on top of all the other worries they're now worried people will be able to figure out who they are...

How do we know they did nothing for the girls? Because the "parents" and Josh both talk about what was done for Josh. You know damned well that they'd be going on about all the wonderful things they'd done for their daughters, if they'd done anything. It's pretty obvious.

Unfortunate anytime a high profile case is within a family this is going to happen. But once again for me it goes back to the family chose to do a reality show after all this transpired. They still thrust these under aged children into the spotlight. Over and over and over again. Knowing darn well what took place. With no thought to those victims at all.

The scuttlebutt over at Free Jinger is that Megyn Kelly and the Duggars are preparing to blame the police chief for releasing the police report. Classic blame the messenger move. Sigh.

I can honestly say that I haven't decided if I will watch the interview or not. As a Social Worker I hope that they are asked if they investigated where Josh learned this behavior since it is proven that in MOST (but not all) situations where a child molests another child that it was caused by them being molested themselves. One thing that I have found from working with foster children as a Social Worker, is that many parents who isolate their children are often found to have done so as a way to get away with behavior such as molestation, drug abuse, etc...
That does not excuse Josh not being given some extensive therapy for his behavior and therapy for the girls. CPS should have been involved in the situation to monitor the safety for all of the children. Home visits over a period of time should have occurred. Parenting courses should have been required for Jim Bob and Michelle due to their lack of providing help for ALL of the children.
I do believe in forgiveness in order to heal. My best friend was murdered in 2000. When I went to church two elderly women came to me and asked if they could pray WITH me for the man who had murdered her. I was horrified and angry that they would even suggest that I pray for him. It took me two years to realize that my anger was only causing me additional pain and trauma. If I was going to heal from the loss of this wonderful woman I had to forgive him. The truth is God loves ALL of us the exact same amount. ANYONE who comes to him with repentance in his heart God will forgive them. That included her murderer. It could be that the Duggar girls have also reached the same point in their lives that I did and realized that if they wanted to heal they had to forgive as well. It is not my place to say that they should not forgive.
I still stand behind the fact that perhaps a thorough investigation by CPS needs to occur to be sure that ALL of the children are protected. Both the girls from Josh and the boys by whomever possibly taught him this behavior!

If they allow a spin off, I will stop feeling sorry that their privacy was violated. If they are as upset as I think they should be over this coming out, then they would not show their faces back on TV. We'll see... you may just be right!!!! I'm sure you didn't mean it theway it sounded but 'we' ( general we ) have no right to think they should feel one way or the other. And the girls haven't done anything wrong. I can't tell them what career they should or shouldn't have because their brother molested them. And their parents failed them completely. I Didn't watch the previous show, and I won't watch a spin off, but 'we' ( general we ) shouldn't put limits on what victims can or can't should or shouldn't do. I'm not sure how to feel about a spin off if it had JUST the girls ( no parents or josh ever ) because I feel that holding victims back because of what happened to them is wrong. But some how, some way, it would still benefit the Duggars as a whole and I can't support people who are such complete hypocrites, so yea I'm not so for it either. I feel bad for the girls, but they have NO reason to hide or feel shamed. Josh should feel shame and never be in the public eye again, not the girls. Also everyone chooses a career to make money and be paid, so I can't hold that against the girls either. If that's the career they would like for themselves I can't tell them they can't. Frankly, it's nearly the only skill their parents allowed them to have.

There are numerous stories/op pieces out there as to why/how the whole incest and cover up by the Duggars of Josh's incest will hurt the GOP and Conservatives.
You can bet that there will be a number of conservative Republicans who want the story to go away so as to do less damage to the political party, but rather than saying that, they will hide behind the more politically correct excuse that they really have the abused girls' best interests at heart.
I predict that part of Kelly's interview will involve highlighting the importance of everyone "moving on" for the victims' sakes, when who will benefit most will be the conservative backers of the Duggars.

I don't think the majority of Republicans hold them in high regard. I think most see them as a reality TV show family trying to make a lot of money. I know most people haven't liked them because of how the girls are treated to be second mothers/servants. Mike Huckabee hasn't been a viable candidate for any type of office for quite some time; certainly not president. I'm surrounded by Republicans. I have a relative who currently holds a political position. A couple of other relatives who have been voting delegates. It's much more fun to hate on Obama. If there's going to be complaining on Facebook it's about him. I don't know, maybe it's because I'm not surrounded by tea baggers. ETA: I really think by the time the presidential election comes around, the Republicans will HAVE to pick a more moderate candidate. Especially with the passage of gay marriage in more than 30 states and the softening stance on immigration (they need latino/latina votes).

I hadn't even thought about it until I was looking for the FOX news coverage of Hastert discussed earlier and came upon a story about the Duggars scandal hurting the GOP, especially the conservatives. I then googled just that, and was surprised at the numerous op ed pieces that came up. I agree that the moderate Republicans don't follow/adore them, but there are enough fan girls here that make me believe part of the conservative segment does. And since FOX tends toward the conservative side of the GOP, I won't be surprised if a happy ending/forgiveness/moving on is encouraged in Kelly's interview with them. I hope that the GOP does throw the ultra-conservative push aside and nominates someone moderate for president. I think it would be better for both parties and the nation.

I'd like it if Kelly turns out to be as tough and no-nonsense as some people here have described her, but the realist in me thinks the show will end up being a fluff piece. "Josh was a child, we sent him away for help, we love all our children equally, everyone involved (most especially the victims [who will never be referred to as victims, I'm sure]) has forgiven Josh, this is only being thrown about now because the liberals want to trash conservative Christians, we've all moved on and were wonderfully happy and healthy until this was brought to light, any pain any of the children/family is now going through is the fault of liberals... " Pick your point. I'm positive more than one of these sentiments will be expressed during the interview.

I had no idea that the Duggars were so well connected that this could do damage to the Republican party. I only thought of them as a religious family with a "reality" show. I spend less than thirty minutes an entire year watching all reality shows combined, so I must have missed that. I do hate to think of the thinly veiled victims having to go through this endlessly. Why do you think FOX News would interview them if they were simply a reality TV show family? Jim Bob Duggar ran for the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate from Arkansas, a couple of times, but lost each time. It was in his 2002 campaign that he called for death penalty for incest... LOL!

News channels interview all sorts of people for all sorts of crazy reasons. Mostly because they show what viewers will watch. They cover plenty of reality "stars". I'm sure I am not the only one who doesn't pay attention to each states senate and representative elections. I've never lived in Arkansas so unless there is a reason to believe their choice makes a national difference, it is off my radar. I guess if you followed the Duggars or followed politics, you would know. I knew and I don't follow the Duggars, but I care who sits in the Senate and if they have crazy-ass ideas like the death penalty for incest. Because whoever sits in the Senate has an effect on MY LIFE and that of my family, even if my state doesn't elect them. The Duggars are politically connected to the GOP. More than one campaign for the Senate. Hence, they are giving an interview to FOX News instead of NBC, ABC or CBS. ETA: you do understand that Senators vote on National issues, so the Senators in the 49 states other than the one you live in have an impact on your life? That is why it is such a big deal as to whether there is a GOP or Democratic majority in the Senate and the House?

I read the stories about the Duggars on here and Facebook, but other than that, I have never even been remotely interested in watching their show.
I inherently disagree with putting innocent children on a reality tv show,so I've never been a fan.
As far as the Duggars affecting the election, I just don't give a crap. The Democrats have a candidate who basically was willing to stop at nothing to make money (including being complicit in selling Uranium rights in North America to the Russians). I'm still incredibly stunned at the pure greed and corruption shown by the Clintons.
So if the terrible decisions of the Duggars made about their children affect people's votes, it is my belief that the people would never have voted Republican in the first place. The Duggars aren't connected to any of the Republican candidates except Huckabee, who I like as a media personality but can't stand as a candidate, and can't see winning the nomination.

I was going to say that I don't know a conservative that wouldn't agree. In theory I think they would but I have learned this year that many people don't understand the effects sexual abuse can have on someone. They don't realize that you aren't healed once it stops. And the pain and effects are lifelong and severe Unfortunately I agree with your prediction. I am sure that the Duggards have given them a list of questions they will not answer and there was an agreement that Kelly isn't allowed to go there. If this is a slap on the hand to the "judgers I will be ticked" jen

Sorry what I meant is that if the interview is a hand slap to all of us who the Duggards and their followers believe have judged and been hard on them I will be ticked. If I were the Duggards I would go on tv and take full responsibility and tell the world what they are doing to help their daughters. That they are in counseling with a licensed counselors. I hope they would be sincere And apologize that this was handled wrong.

How do we know they did nothing for the girls? they don't, they just want that to be the case... so they can spend more time posting here about how horrible they are.
Gotta luv those who say they 'don't watch Fox' but KNOW how Megyn will do her interview.
Who's gonna start the 'I got it so wrong...' thread after the interview?

Here's what you know as a kid faced with a 'tell or not' dilemma: 1. What will happen to my family? 2. Will anyone believe me anyway?
#2 is a very real possibility, so #1 becomes too much of a gamble. Suffer in silence. Keep the family together. Spare your parents the pain. After all- maybe this is not what you think it is. Maybe you're being overreactive. Maybe you're being selfish. Maybe you somehow made it happen. Maybe it's your fault. OMG- you're the bad guy- not him.
So in a situation where the parents know and it's (for however long) a situation that causes turmoil in the family- the 'fix' is on you. Say you forgive, trust your parents to do the right thing, trust God to heal your brother, go with the flow and it will all be OK. The family can go back to normal. Wouldn't that be nice, sweetie, if we could put this behind us?
And so you do...but you really don't. Maybe they can. How can you?

Honestly? Anything short of them saying "we fucked up. We put our daughters in a horrible situation and didn't do what we should have done to protect them and others. We have now disowned our disgusting son and are working to repair the damage our negligence towards our daughters. Due to this, we are withdrawing from the public spectacle and will try to work towards repairing the damage we willingly caused in an attempt to keep our family together and our beliefs intact. We learned that the methods taught to deal with this kind of deviance was unacceptable and foolhardy and we are looking towards changing the way we see this situation" is not going to be good enough.
Of course they won't say that. They will say that they did nothing wrong. And that's sad.
