I must have an internal 12 yr old boy. I rolled with the Beavis and Butthead. And cried with the Indeed. Oh and the lemons and 2020. I thought that one was good. Go Bucs!! I’ve teared up several times so far today.

There is a pandemic going on and these people are not in your bubble. Ask your father to take his little family out so you and your sister can visit Grandma.
Seriously, it’s the only responsible way to handle this.

Christopher Plummer, probably best known as Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music, has died today, aged 91. Christopher Plummer diesWe’ve lost SO many! It seems like every time I turn around, another beloved person is gone.

I’m shocked there’s been no response to this!! See this too close to home, as DS 1 believes it was actually the Left who urged on the rioters, and DS2 believes the virus is no worse than the common cold but there is some conspiracy to lie about it for some nefarious purpose.
I despair. I was sure I raised them better, but right wing radio appeals to the men in their circle, and it is insidious.
It was interesting that the believers will support theories that conflict.

Ha! I live with a Bourbon connoisseur. I know way to much about it. He even dragged poor DIL and their then two YO to Kentucky for a tour of the old respected distilleries.
I’ve preferred Scotch all my life, but I admit, the Bourbon is growing on me. Please report back how that cocktail goes over.

I would be relentless in my approval of the baby names. Whether it’s a test and they choose another name or not, you look good.
If they try to push the ridiculous and demeaning grandparents names, just firmly redirect to the child themselves later. “Come to Grammie, Grammie loves you, here’s $10 from Grammie and Grandpa”, the kid will get the idea.

This. So much. He will probably moan about “ cancel culture”, but it’s just consequences. Plenty of talented, decent people in the world. If you go to iTunes, you'll see that he has a good 6-7 songs in the top 20 most popular for this week. People are buying them like crazy to support him. Ugh! People keep disappointing me

This is indeed very sad, but Sandy, you have gone above and beyond, and I agree the best you can do is salvage what you can for yourself and your daughter. And of course, continue to vent here, that’s what this place is for. We’re here For you.
I truly wish there is some measure of peace and joy in your future. You’ve earned it, and like me, it will not be the retirement and older age you thought you were working towards, enjoying your companion of many decades, and the fruits of your hard work financially.

Tell him if he pays upfront you’ll pick up the essentials, but not the V day crap. No money, no pickie uppy.
And then be done.
And Sandy, I’m really sorry things played out this way. This just stinks. You and the person he used to be deserved so much better.

Biden has made it clear that he wants schools open asap. My guess is that the urgency to reopen that started in mid-December may have come from this directive. Actually, I don't hold out too much hope for the Biden administration and public education. What happened to schools under the Obama administration was a travesty and there is definitely a connection there. Even with FLOTUS as an educator. I hope to hell that I'm wrong here. Isn’t Biden pushing for teachers to be vaccinated though? I don’t think he is wanting to reopen unless it can be done safely. I don’t think he is suggesting schools open now. I think he is wanting money given to schools so they can open safely and when teachers are vaccinated. As much as I like Inslee (Washington state) and feel Kate Brown (oregon state) is sort of a nitwit, I do think she is doing the right thing prioritizing teachers to get the vaccine. I am frankly stunned that Inslee is letting schools open now when only teachers 50 and older can schedule the vaccine and I bet only a small fraction of the teachers in that demographic have been able to even get the first dose. Yes, the article I linked above showed Governor Brown taking a lot of heat for being willing to bump teachers ahead of seniors for vaccinations. They claim she’s going to be the reason some elderly die. But I agree with her stance completely. Vaccinating the teachers will only put the shots back for the seniors a couple weeks. Totally worth it to make it safer for teachers to go back to school.

The same thing is happening in Pennsylvania. My husband’s 8th grade class went back in person some time in October, I think it only lasted 5 weeks. Our whole household (him, myself, and my 25yo DS) came down with Covid around the 5th of December although we didn’t know it until a few days later. My DH got very sick, very fast, and ended up in the hospital. After a week of trying to get oxygen into him, they placed him on the ventilator, and he began to improve. Then, about 10 days later, his body started giving out, and he passed away on New Year’s Day. I was hospitalized as well during the latter part of his illness, and because I was in the same ICU, I at least got to see him one last time, although he was already gone. He always said “ If I get Covid, it will kill me” because he had a heart attack in 2012 and was diabetic ( but well under control). He was scared the day he texted me about going on the vent. And I just kept telling him that it would be ok. He had 4 years to retirement, and our board had offered an early retirement deal two years ago, which would have been perfect, and then rescinded it the day before it was to be approved. There is no excuse for allowing so many kids with all their different ways of considering Covid precautions, to expose my husband, who was only 58 years old. He is gone, I almost died, and people still aren’t thinking things through.... Your story just breaks my heart. And makes me mad. All you teachers, I think our society could find some better way to handle this than sacrificing teachers because the workers need childcare.

I’m really worried I won’t want to get dressed the way I used to.
My closet is full of clothes I chose carefully because they were the way I wanted to present myself. Colorful, sporty, and figure flattering. And then there are my church clothes, pencil skirts, bright sweaters, lovely dresses.
For zoom meetings, ( including church services ), I wear colorful sweaters, sometimes adding pretty shawls. But I haven’t put on a figure hugging skirt in almost a year. It’s either loose pants, or an elastic waist full and longish skirt. So much more comfortable!
When I go out, it’s been leggings and long shirts. And coats and Uggs during the winter. I’ve avoided jeans and other trousers with waistbands that require holding my stomach in. I haven’t even gained weight, it’s just more comfortable.
I do next to nothing with my hair, my only makeup is filling in my eyebrows, and jewelry is putting on earrings during zoom meetings. No necklaces, rings, bracelets. I’m seriously worried I won’t want to go back to wearing rings! My hands love not having them on.
I did some watercolor painting today. Oregon was getting our rare unicorn snowfall, and I put on a flowered full skirt with a soft pink sweater, drank tea, And wondered if I’m becoming an entirely different person. Yesterday I wore a loose a flowered skirt with a t shirt! Around the house. Just more comfortable.
I really don’t know if I’ll be going back to my former wardrobe.

I recently read a line about how racism has harmed all of us. It was an intriguing line for me because as a white person, the wealth of our nation and relative stability I’ve enjoyed so my life was built on the backs of enslaved humans. So I had to ponder how racism has hurt people like me. I was raised for the most part by people who were as non racist as that era produced. I worshipped in a completely integrated church, calling everyone my brothers and sisters unhypocritically. And yet, I was born in the 50’s. In recalling my family and friends from the early 60’s, I have to wince now. The polite way to refer to blacks was “colored”. There was a sense that black peoples should be grateful for the opportunities open to them. We totally agreed with the saying that a black person has to be twice as good and work twice as hard to get to the same position as whites, but we were glad at least that they could. I bring this up to bring up the subject of progress. And progress is tricky. Ever made so much progress in many individuals in the last 50 years. And yet Olan is not wrong in saying in many ways progress is going backwards. I blame backlash, how else to explain 74 million people voting for Trump even after they’ve seen the last four years? And the backlash started with Obama’s presidency. So individuals who are truly working on themselves like @peano, and for that matter, me, ( I haven’t called anyone colored since the 60’s, and an understanding there’sa lot more to being an anti racist than having black family members and not feeling superior to blacks), are making important progress. But our nation, not so much. And that’s one of the ways racism hurts of us. It created this society with ingrained ideas and preconceptions that need to be recognized and painfully pulled out. It created unjust systems that harm millions, and immeasurable hate, fear, guilt and a stew of other feelings that tear apart those that might have otherwise loved. That two people who AGREE on so much find themselves at odds, rather than being united against the common enemy of systemic racism, is to me another example of how racism harms all growing up surrounded by it. I for one am deeply concerned at the direction this country is going. I do believe that those of us who are trying to erase racism do well to look for the good in each other. I’m too tired to go back and edit all the typos. I hate typing in my phone. Duuuude....do you not see how you just made your reply again all about how awesome white people are and how we should all bend over backwards for their effort? Guess what... as other pea suggested, don’t say anything. Sit, read, listen and learn. Let me see if I can make this easy to understand with an example. A grandma visits Holocaust museum and remembers her days in the nazi camp when she was a child. A white dude standing next to her starts saying how nazis are humans too and they also I am sure regret what they did while also saying, “I am sure you were hurt lady but.....”blah blah blah Is it the job of the grandma to now apologize to the white dude for “offending” fucking nazis? Because from where I am standing, I would love for the grandma to flip the white dude off and tell him to shove his support. Did you just equate white people who are sincerely trying to be allies and make progress in their anti racism with nazis? Of course my comment was about my experience. It’s the only one I can draw from. It would be beyond wrong to assume I know anything about a black person’s lived experience. And I am totally mystified where you got the idea I want even a smidgen of praise for anything I’ve done. Much less “bend over backward “. No where did I say anybody needed praise for their anti racist thoughts it actions. I meant to share my experience of how that looks and sound different today than it did 50 years ago, and not everybody is at the same place. The only message I’m getting is to say nothing on this subject, as it will only be wrong. I really don’t see how that will help anything. I like learning. I’m open to changing. And then changing again. Olan ‘s threads always give me something to think about.

I would and have done menial, dirty, exhausting and otherwise undesirable types of work. I’ve also pared down expenses to an almost comical degree. Whatever it took.
But I have empathy for someone who is worried they can’t fit into a new job. I chose jobs that did not give me anxiety even if they paid less. The best paying job I ever had I had to quit because of panic attacks.
I agree that just helping financially will not motivate change. I like the idea of seeing which positions will work with their experience and makeup.
I also agree with everything @merge said.
