Thanks ladies for all the information. I will encourage my DD to start to reach out to the others in the unit that are in the same situation and check into all the programs suggested. I am not sure if she has done any of that. She is relatively new to being a military spouse and still adjusting to that life style. I am sure she will be fine, just needs some time to figure it all out. For those that asked: I would love to go to her for the holiday but can't due to a family/work situation at home. Hopefully, I can go in the spring. Her dad and step-mom are going to visit over Thanksgiving. Thanks for the suggestion of Skypeing. We do Facetime quite a bit now but Skype would be an excellent way to spend some time with her on Christmas and see the DGD's. I appreciate all the help. P.S. Army "bases" are called posts, or forts.
link Oops, sorry! That shows my lack of knowledge of army terminology. So noted, thanks!

My younger DD34 is a military wife with two small children (DGD's 3 and 4 mos.). She was in the army for four years (where she met and married SIL) but is out now. SIL has been in the army in since he was 18 and intends on being a Lifer. SIL was just sent out on his third tour of duty. In all their years together DD has never been alone on the holidays until this year. She has either been home with family or with SIL. I have no experience with military life. No one in our family was ever in the military during my lifetime.
She called me yesterday upset that she will be by herself for the first time over the holidays. She misses her family and the older DGD keeps asking about grandmas, grandpas and cousins (they were all home last year while SIL was overseas) and when can she see them again. I really didn't have a lot of good advice for her because I have no experience with this.
Without going into a lot of details it is simply not feasible for her to come home for the holidays. She is living on a large base so I would think that there must be some sort of support group or something that she can do to help her through this but I don't know what is available to her.
So, what did you military wives do when you were alone on a base far from family? Even if you aren't military I'd appreciate any advice or suggestions.

DH has always had multiple names for all of our cats. Sometimes I have ask which one he's referring too when he comes up with a new name. Here's a few: Bob (who is a female, long story how she got the name): Bobcat, Boob, Booberella, Miss Priss, Brown Paw (she has one brown paw) Lucky: Ducky, the Duckmeister, Capt. McWhineypants, Fatty Oliver: Ollie, Thumper (he's very loud when he runs around the house) Belle: Bitch cat (she really is bitchy), Princess Kitty, Stinky McStinkbutt He always says the next cat is going to be called Sh!thead. I always nix that.

Probably chicken fajitas. It's just me tonight and I don't really feel like making a large meal for one.

I always put all the Christmas ornaments on the tree, even the ones I don't care for. After all they only are out once a year and would feel bad for the ones left in the boxes. Crazy, I know and makes no sense. But I do it anyway. The really bad part is that I am usually gifted one or two new ornaments a year and the tree is getting pretty crowded. I may need to gift some ornaments to my DD's. They are young and don't have much for their trees.

I have a number if things that are supposed to be handwash but they go in the machine on delicate. I've never had an issue. I even have a top that says dry clean only that I accidently washed and it came out fine. So it gets washed in the machine as needed. The only reason it got washed in the first place was because 1. I didn't check the label (duh!) and 2. It's a type of material that I thought would be washable (a soft knit-type material).

Camping in the upper pennisula of Michigan. We only had access to radio, no TV so we had no idea how bad it was. We didn't see any real news reports for about five days. In hindsight that was a good thing, I tend to be a news junkie and all the coverage probably would have put me on overload.

Apparently we like to shop in Dollar Tree in Illinois - to the tune of $700. Um, no. Wow! That's a lot of Dollar Tree stuff. They must have been trying to buy out the store.

Both me and my brother were trained by the time we were 2 1/2. DD [HASH]1 was trained by 2 1/2 and DD [HASH]2 by three.
One of my middle granddaughters is 3 1/2 and is still not trained. She'll come running when she goes in her diaper and tells mommy she needs changed. I said something to DD that if DGD knows when she is wet then she should be able to tell mommy when she needs to go. DD got mad at me for that, so we don't discuss it anymore but it bugs the crap out of me. (DD does not like taking advice from anyone is the type of person that must learn from her own mistakes and not others.)
The other day DD told me she'd given up on trying to train DGD. Somehow I managed to keep my mouth shut at that comment. Argghhh!

. . . that I was not going to do the ALS ice bucket challenge. It's a great cause but I have my own favorite charities and was NOT going to dump ice water over myself. Then I was challenged by my [HASH]1 DGD, who is eight. <sigh> So I did it but made it clear in my video that it was for her and only her. It's amazing what you will do for grandchildren that you would not do for other people. DGD was very excited that I did this for her.
P.S. I did not donate to ALS, I did donate some extra to my favorite charity.
P.P.S. I am pretty sure DD put this idea in DGD's head but she won't admit to it. DD knows I couldn't refuse DGD.

How much do you think you might entertain when you finally settle in one place? We rarely entertain and when we do its very casual so china is not appropriate. I have my great grandmother's china and haven't used it once in 25+ years. But I have room to store it so it stays in the boxes in the basement. I can't bear to give it up but I will probably never get it out to use.

We are one of the 5M that their plans don't meet the new standards. Our insurance company has already told us our premium is going up about 50% a month. Ugh! I wish Obama would have kept his promise that if you like your plan, you can keep it.

Pork chops on the grill, corn on the cob and either cole slaw or something with zucchini. Maybe cheesy zucchini spears if I really feel like using the oven when I get home.

Since your kid is older you might consider the State Fair or White River Gardens. There is also the NCAA Hall of Fame and the Historical Museum. But all of these are near downtown. Not too far from where you are but probably a 20 - 30 minute drive. I can't think of anything really close to where you will be on the north side except some great shopping.

The article I read said that this was a joke and not true. I'll have to see if I can find it again.
ETA: Well, the article I saw was at the top of my new feed earlier today but now it is gone. There are two others with this same story but without the correction. Hmmm . . .

Eating out somewhere. We have to go grocery shopping because we are leaving to go see DD and family at their lake cottage tomorrow night. When I get home I need to finish packing and make at least one of the side dishes we are suppose to take with us.

We've had a cooler-than-normal summer here in Central Indiana. While I don't really want 90+ degree temps it would be nice if it would get up over 80. We're suppose to go visit DD and family this weekend at their lake cottage in Michigan. Looks like it's going to be really cool which means no swimming in the lake for me. Not very happy about that. Usually the best part of the weekend is playing in the lake with the DGD's.

Mostly I enjoy reading the political threads unless they get really ugly. I've learned a lot about politics and sometimes the threads can really make me think about my position on things. Anyway, I was thinking about non-binding resolutions the other day and really I don't get them. What is the point? It seems to me they are just statements about a situation or position and don't really accomplish anything. So why does Congress or a State Legislatures pass them? They appear to be a waste of time to me. Am I missing something?

I volunteer for a non-profit and I'd love to staff the office. Right now we have two part-timers who are okay but we need someone who really knows how to run an office properly. That would be me.

Lots of ((((hugs)))). It's so hard to understand why these things happen. I have a childhood friend who is going through something similar. It's very sad. Try to be as supportive as you can (as I am sure you already are).

Someone posted a recipe for Parmesan zucchini spears. I am going to try that with a side salad and some marinara sauce. I have zucchini coming out my ears and I don't even have a garden!

It's really really sad. It's also the stuff of nightmares for the Anns of the world. I'm an Ann. And while I trust my husband and I don't believe he would ever do that to me, it is one of those things that nibbles at the back of my mind. What if? It's a scary thought. I am an Ann, too. And I also have those scary thoughts. The other day I found a very long hair on just-washed bath towel I was putting away. I have very, very short hair. For a moment I had a bit of panic. Where did it come from? To whom does it belong? Bad thoughts were going through my head. Then I started to think that we had just visited the DGD's, both who have very long hair. It probably came from one of them. But for a moment I was very scared.
