I’ve known about Juneteenth my whole life. I remember learning Lift Every Voice at church and wondering which one of the choir elders had lived during the time Africans were enslaved. www.theatlantic.com/culture/archive/2020/06/juneteenth-has-always-been-worthy-celebration/613270/One of my colleagues at Rhodes College, the professor Charles McKinney, wrote recently to his black students: “We are not solely the history of fighting white folks. That is not who we are. We are double-dutch in summer. We are letting the air out of Big Mama’s house. We are Uncle Ray’s jokes on top of jokes. We are collards, second lines, and blue lights in the basement. We are swagger in the midst of chaos. We are reunions and step shows. We are the borough and the bayou. We are church till two, and the corner till four. We are a universe of experiences.” And so, in the middle of a chaotic period in this nation’s history, Black Americans pause to celebrate. They will barbecue, and dance, and pray, and love, and live in the name of freedom. The rest of America can use the day off to work on its own freedom—from a shameful past and a violent present.

Hi all, I am actually a volunteer over at White Nonsense Roundup. "Liking" our page on Facebook is the best way to become familiar with our mission and to request assistance when needed. We prioritize requests for help from black, brown and indigenous people but will join in any conversation when tagged/invited in order to address white nonsense in conversations about race. For example, Oaksong, if your relatives are on your FB page spouting racism (often disproved statistics or so-called "right wing" talking points), you can request a volunteer join in the conversation to address the misinformation. www.facebook.com/whitenonsenseroundup/Come check us out. Hey 👋🏿 cheyenne Are you still around? cheyenne

Good read. I often wonder what white people think is the logical response black people should have for our lived experiences and those of our ancestors.

Buy from a Black-owned business today, perform an act of resistance, no matter how small, donate to a charity or organization whose mission is racial and social justice, and contact your legislators to ask them to make Juneteenth a national holiday! Thanks for posting! Happy Juneteenth

I think the white privilege part of this is 1. Being inspired by BLM to come up with a way to celebrate themselves 2. Coming up with ways to circumvent policing knowing this did not put them at personal risk 3. Justifying their own celebration which was previously denied to them by citing BLM protests I see no hypocrisy in saying it’s okay to take to the streets to protest police brutality but not to hold large parties. The hypocrisy is saying it's not a public health issue to protest. But it's a public health issue for everything else that involves a mass gathering. Oddly enough, the public health issue that is an issue for anything other than the protests is actually more deadly to black people. I totally support the right to protest, provided people follow the guidelines. But my point is if it's not a PH issue to protest with masks, then you should be able to have outdoor concerts now and other things that are currently not happening and is killing our economy.

This post had me kind of down yesterday, but then I saw this twitter response from Lisa Sharon Harper ( @lisaharper on twitter) (LOVE HER!) and I felt so much better. Thought I would share it with you. If you don't want to click on the link, here is her response (how do insert an actual twitter screen shot or response, btw?) Dear .@louiegiglio, with this thread I follow the example of Paul, who publicly rebuked Peter in book of Galatians when Peter tried to placate the faction called judaizers by practicing segregation. Your championing of the term #whiteblessing in reference to #slavery is SIN. 1/ Your sin against Black people, especially women, was public. Therefore, your rebuke must also be public. For, you are an international leader. People of European descent and BIPOC in your network will follow your lead into sin, if you are not corrected publicly. 2/ #whiteblessing I intend to do 3 things in this thread: 1) correct your thinking on white privilege and white “blessing,” 2) suggest a 3rd term that is the essence of this entire set-up: #WhitePatriarchy, 3) reflect for a moment on the impact of your sin. 3/ #whiteblessing First, slavery was neither white blessing, nor #whiteprivilege. To call it either term is to imagine God as the one who mysteriously bestowed said “blessing” and/or “privilege” onto His benevolent, innocent White race. 4/ #whiteblessingBoth blessings and privileges are given. They do not magically appear out of thin air. God gives blessings. In scripture, God blesses those who do what is just and good. Parents give privileges to children who do well. 5/ #whiteblessing #whiteprivilege By calling slavery #whiteblessing or #whiteprivilege, you attempt to conscript God as a co-conspirator in the abhoration of human hierarchy. You attempt to make #whiteness God’s responsibility; aligning God with the very setup that wages war against God’s image on earth. 6/ It was not blessing that built the foundations for your empire, sir. It was serial murder, rape, breeding farms, mass family separation, mass lynchings, exploitation of labor/ land, thumbs on the scales of law, redlining and gerrymandering. 7/ #whiteblessing #White Privilege bore your “whiteblessings”—your money, your houses, your private jets, your banks, your universities, your political power, your two-car garages, your stucco homes, your CEO positions and salaries. SIN bore the shirt on your back. God had NOTHING to do with it. 8/ The word you are looking for is #whitepatriarchy. It imagines a world designed by God where white men are created to rule all else. Then it builds, protects and enforces that world through military and police force, rape, law, money and lots of golf. 9/ #whiteblessing Mr. @louiegiglio, the impact of your unwillingness to call a thing a thing, is that SIN is given the cover of sanitized language. What will it take for you to do what you claim to do? What will it take for you to lead—Into true repentance? 10/10 #whiteblessing #WhitePrivilege I’m a big fan of Lisa Harper as well. This was good.

Any mamas available to continue to seek justice for Breonna Taylor? Her mother would love some help. abcnews.go.com/US/breonna-taylors-mom-seeking-answers-death-time-grieve/story?id=71184205Palmer said that when she arrived at the apartment, "the street was lined with police." She spoke to an officer there who told her she needed to get to the hospital, she said. However, after waiting in the hospital for two hours, she was told her daughter wasn't there and returned to the apartment. "When I got there … they told me to hold on, they'd get a detective over to talk to me, which they did," Palmer said. "It took a couple of hours. He comes over. He asked if I knew if Breonna or Kenny had any enemies or anybody that would want to hurt them. And of course, no, absolutely not." "And I'm asking, 'Where's Breonna? Where's Kenny?' And so, he tells me to hang tight. He'll be back," Palmer continued. "It was sometime later [that] he comes back. He asked if anything had been going on with Breonna and Kenny -- if they had problems. And I asked, 'Are you insinuating that Kenny did this?' Because he would never." Kimberlé Crenshaw, a law professor at the University of California Los Angeles and Columbia School of Law, says it's typical among black women to be involved in incidents like Taylor's. "When we think about where black women aren't safe, they're not safe in the only place they're supposed to be," Crenshaw said. "Black women typically get killed when police do raids." "No-knock warrants allow police officers, based on one of the lowest standards possible -- reasonableness -- to be able to knock down your door in the dead of night, plainclothes," she continued. "So, from your perspective, you think you're experiencing a home invasion." Police say they were looking for drugs, but none were found in the apartment. Also, the drug dealer they had been investigating had already been arrested earlier that evening. Walker was initially charged with attempted murder. His case was dropped. Meanwhile, none of the police involved in Taylor's death have been charged or arrested, and they remain on the job.

To both not know what he was trying to say yet be confident his intentions were good doesn’t compute. As long as someone keeps coming to the defense of white men they will continue to behave like white men do.

Once upon a time, before he was famous, I knew Louie Giglio. This one was hard for me because it's not who I thought I knew. It grieved me to see what he said and to see his apology. I do believe his heart is broken. I believe he is remorseful and I believe it's for more than just using the wrong words. I believe his words came from a place of bad theology, and heart biases that maybe he didn't even know he had. I hope that's what he's sorry for. But yes, out of the heart the mouth speaks so his words did reveal some deeply wrong beliefs. I've said things before that I then go, "wow, where did that come from?" and I've had to really take an inward look at what is was rooted in that I might not have even known was there. Whether he knew it was there or not, I hope he's taking that inward look. As a white man, he shouldn't be leading this conversation anyway. He should be listening and learning. Bad theology is exactly the phrasing I would use. Social justice work is Kingdom work without a doubt. Anyone who doesn’t see that needs to open their bibles and study Nehemiah. The influence he had with the King. How he fasted cried and prayed but didn’t move. The time it took. What happened when he was brave enough to do what he was called to do. What happened to my ancestors was against everything God called humanity to do. Time is now to do the work. Also Giglio meant what he said. We should examine how a white man can acknowledge that the work of my ancestors is the framework of white blessings but everyone balks at wealth redistribution, Reparations etc. Un-assing what isn’t yours is also something white Christians need to examine. What are you holding on to that isn’t yours to have. You can call it a white blessing if you need to 🤷🏾♀️Whatever shifts you into action is fine by black people.

I can occupy space without fear of someone policing me.
I feel protected in most spaces. Fear doesn’t guide my decision making.
When I cry people pay attention.
I can comment on how well behaved other people’s children are like I am the authority on parenting.

That is so f’ed up. Just on the basis of how they lied on the report alone it seems like they should be charged. Clearly the police have come to believe they are justified to do whatever they want with no repercussions. Did you notice one of the related articles? 5 white people trespass and threaten a black man, he calls 911 and he was arrested. Sickening. I just did. Crazy. And they all look like meth heads too so now we know drug addicted citizens get better policing than black citizens though they probably pay no taxes and harm the community. If one killed the other it wouldn’t be called white on white crime either. Meanwhile a property paying homeowner has to live with the humiliation of that arrest for the rest of his life.

in the "enlightened" bay area.. the big article in the front section today was a report on a local police agency.. vallejo.. they have killed several black men for little reason in the last few years.. the report found the agency out of date on training, a high disregard for authority, a feeling of superiority.. basically an old boys club of white guys. there was a long long list of corrections needed. this town is majority minority.. and a lower income place in the expensive bay area. part of the problem is all these small police dept. who don't have the budget for modern staffing, training and so on. there was a letter to the editor from a lawyer who suggested that the police be required to go through a 4 year academy.. so they really know the law and are well trained. Morning, Hi. I know everyone has suggestions and I'm not BEING SNARKY, thank you for this post. If we go by the letter to the editor and require a 4 year acadmey, during those 4 years who's on the streets? Most agenices are under staffed as it is right now. Think about it, maybe 100 LEO's a shift for a county of 300,000. I can't tell you how many LEO'S were on the fence about early retirement before but with was it happening are putting in their papers. This is going to be a HUGE issue, we are losing experience, knowledge and common sense and will be left with young inexperienced LEO with no experienced trainers. Just a question, what addtional training would be suggested? ...to all that are about to pounce try to be civil. I think we are past the time for additional training. LEO are more of a menace to society than the citizens they are sworn to protect. It’s really clear with the spotlight on police officers just how badly the system is working. Tons of documentaries, tons of dead black bodies, tons of history to revisit. A lot of solid research and you still have this type of defense. It’s really inexcusable at this point to defend law enforcement. It’s okay to be quiet. I personally don’t give a damn about “experienced trainers” retiring because the method of policing they use shouldn’t be passed down to anyone. The system is working as it should and Black people won’t be tolerating this treatment anymore. Defund the police. Disarm the police. Fuck the police. www.vox.com/2020/6/6/21280643/police-brutality-violence-protests-racism-khalil-muhammad

...stop saying WOC or POC when you are talking about black folks. Will do! I rarely use it and have only used it recently, because it is used with such frequency here on 2 peas, and I wrongly assumed it was ok. I’ve never been able to adequately express why here it just felt dismissive. Here is a great article about it medium.com/@cvonhassett/dont-call-me-a-person-of-color-i-m-black-5359a03bc35bI learned a new one today too from the article: Descendants of American Chattel Slavery (DACS)

www.today.com/tmrw/what-share-mic-now-june-10-t183880The #ShareTheMicNow campaign on June 10 is underway, with famous white women handing over their social media platforms to black women for the day in an effort to expand the reach of black women's voices. A promotional post for the event shared on Instagram by one of its participants, former TODAY anchor Katie Couric, explains that Share the Mic Now is meant to address the problem that "when the world listens to women, it listens to white women." "For too long, Black women's voices have gone unheard, even though they've been using their voices loudly for centuries to enact change," the post continued. "Today, more than ever, it is NECESSARY that we create a unifying action to center Black women's lives, stories and calls to action. We need to listen to Black women." I’ve been pretty vocal about what I think anti-racism work looks like for awhile here at 2peas. A pretty simple start is simply listening to black women. Of course there is so much more work to do but tuning your ear to the voices of black women is an easy start. If you’d ask me the second easiest task...stop saying WOC or POC when you are talking about black folks. An aside: It would be great if everyone stopped calling me crazy 😜 but believe it or not I don’t really care if you don’t like or listen to me and I’ve always included (via links or pointing you in their direction) other black women who make how not to be a racist palatable for the 2peas community. I do think many of you missed an opportunity by making things personal with me but now is as great a time as any to commit to dismantling racism in this country. Hope everyone tuned into a black woman today. It’s not like we are going to shut up and you can absolutely use my 2peas experience as an example of the resilience silenced black women have. Please listen this time around. For all of us

Now that I know he is afraid of that, I know what protestors need to do. It’s funny you should say that, in the black community when you act out black women will say “Lisa showed her ass” or “O you showing your ass” 😂🤣 and the acting out could be good or bad. It doesn’t really have a negative connotation unless the person speaking is your grandmother and you were told to not show your ass before you proceeded to show your ass. One of the many reasons I love black people. 🥰
