I have PMS right now...I have had to literally take my fingers off the keyboard several times lately!
FB groups--I love and hate them. The dumb questions are bad; the lack of basic punctuation and spelling skills is worse. Use a period somewhere in your wall of text, please!!

Re: closure...one of the hardest things I had to learn as an adult was that you just don't get it sometimes. And that there are people who get off on denying it to you. Moving on without closure/answers is tough, but it can be done. When I was able to fill my gap with healthier relationships, that need and the hurt that went with it melted away.

Mystie , LOVE your cards. Beautiful, every one of them. And how long do you heat your "heating pads" with the feed corn in them? I used to use rice in mine but am thinking I should try making them with the feed corn! And StephDRebel, WOW, those are AMAZING! My daughter and I would LOVE those. You should sell them. I would buy them for sure--both the snowmen and tree! Patter, I usually heat mine for 4 minutes. Then I wrap it in a dish towel for insulation and protection from the heat. You kind of have to play with it to see how hot is too hot, but always put a layer or two between your skin and the pad!

I don't usually shop at thrift stores, mostly because it's hard to find clothes in plus-size and I don't really need anything for my home. But my husband loves to thrift shop for his clothes, and he needed a whole mess of things after we did a closet clean-out this fall of some of his frayed and old stuff. So I've been dragged to just about every thrift store in a 25 mile radius in the past month!
My husband has found some really nice clothes. The best have been an LL Bean flannel shirt and a really thick LL Bean Fleece pullover. He's a jacket addict. I guess the nicest things I've found have been a J Jill blouse, a Coldwater Creek fleece pullover, and a Christopher & Banks black cardigan. We're running out of clothes hangers for our closet! And thrift shopping in the wealthier adjoining city definitely makes a difference.
Haven't found anything great for my home yet, but we'll see!

So you're thinking about e-mailing her to ask what you've done to offend her...I just don't see any outcome to that conversation that would make you feel better in any way, do you? I think you would feel better in the long run just stepping off her merry-go-round. I know in the short run it's nice to have closure and some answers, but you know your mom well enough to know the likelihood of that.
Can you do an end-run around her to reach out other family in order to attend family events? It hurts to be left out, I know.

Mystie they are lovely. So detailed. I love to scrapbook but I am such a simple scrapbooker I just envy when scrapbookers and card makers can do such intricate work. Oh, these are deceptively detailed! I used pre-made blank cards, pre-made acrylic overlays on some of them, pre-made tags on some, pre-tied bows, ready-made sentiment stickers, etc. I did cut a few diecuts myself, but the great thing about Anna Griffin is that you can buy these pre-printed elements and then just mix and match them. She has a big Christmas card kit every year, and I used to buy those, but they went from making 50 cards to 40 and then 30, I think (for the same price) so last year I started buying separate elements in her line and making my own "kits." I really enjoy making them because there's just the right amount of thought and effort (i.e. little) involved. I used to feel like I had to create everything from scratch when I crafted, but I'm done with that now. You can see Anna Griffin stuff on the HSN website. Not sure how much Christmas stuff is left, but it's worth a look. And thanks for your kind words.

I've stocked up on foaming hand soap for myself and gotten it for Christmas presents, too, in previous years, but I'm thinking I must have missed the sale this year. Anybody know?

I'm always impressed with the monthly craft thread, but you ladies have really puled out all the stops this month! SO BEAUTIFUL. All I've gotten done so far this month is Christmas cards. I bought a bunch of Anna Griffin supplies again this year, because it's so easy to put them together. Here are a few. If you get one in your mailbox, just act surprised.

Are you filling them with flax seeds? I was thinking about doing them for everyone and filling them with flax seeds. no, i'm making them with whole feed corn. i made these several years ago and the corn worked very well. i find the larger surface area of the corn holds heat better than smaller fillers. i bought a 50lb bag of corn. it filled exactly 23 bags with approximately 5 cups of corn in each bag. I have a bag filled with feed corn that I bought from an old guy at a craft fair about ten years ago. This thing is the BEST microwaveable heating pad I've ever had. It's maybe 16-18" long and 7-8" wide. I can sort of drape it on my arm and shoulder, and it covers a lot of space. And it's sewn with some heavy duty almost upholstery-weight fabric. I love this thing. All that to say...I think the feed corn really makes it what it is. It holds onto the heat really well, and the weight of it feels great. It does smell somewhat like popcorn when I heat it, but so much the better!

I remember reading about fruitcake served with cheese in a James Herriot book when I was a kid, and I thought it sounded delicious. I love fruitcake, and I think the right cheese would be the perfect foil for it. I've never tried it, though!

I haven't made fruitcake in several years, so I'm thinking about making that and trying a new recipe for it (from the King Arthur flour site.) My mom's extended family is doing a Pennsylvania Dutch theme for their Christmas potluck. I'm not quite sure what that will look like, but it made me think of the pfeffernusse (peppernuts) my grandma used to bake sometimes. These aren't the puffy soft pfeffernusse you sometimes see, but small crunchy bites with lots of spices. The recipes tend to come from German and Russian Mennonites. They need to be baked several weeks before you want to eat them so the spices can ripen, so I think I might try bother the fruitcake and the pfeffernusse this week sometime. I probably should have done them in November! I just haven't been in a holiday mood, enjoying fall too much! Here's the fruitcake recipe: Everyone's Favorite FruitcakeI found a few different pfeffernusse recipes and none of them sound quite like what Grandma made, but I think I might try this one and make two different batches, one flavored with anise and the other flavored with cardamom. Pfeffernusse are a thing where everyone has their own preferred spice blend. I'm looking forward to playing with it. Pfeffernusse

My brother lives in Harrisonburg and has for more than 20 years. He went to EMU and stayed forever! It's such a nice little city and a beautiful setting. I second whoever mentioned Jimmy Madison's--it's very good. That's in downtown. If you like BBQ, Hank's Grille and Bar out in McGaheysville is great, we often eat there when we're visiting my brother. I'd say it's about 20 minutes east of downtown.
The book fair is a lot of fun. It's great that it will be open while you're there! The Dayton farmer's market (south of town) is nice but I'm not sure what the hours are for Saturday. It's lots of little shops indoors.

So funny you posted this...I was just now looking out the window at the house right down and across the street that's draped in those cold white LED lights, and feeling miffed that I'm going to have to look at that every night for the next month. And then I thought that in another twenty years, those will be the norm and nobody will remember wonderful warm Christmas lights.
I may be going full Grinch this year, so take my light rant as part of that!

I got Hulu in June so I could binge-watch The Golden Girls. Which I did! Then I watched about nine seasons of MASH. I can't recommend that enough--they've remastered it or something and it looks fantastic! Plus, when you watch it on TVLand or whatever, you're only seeing about half the show, so it's great to see the whole episode.
My husband and I have been watching a little-known NBC sitcom called Superstore which is really funny. I believe you can also see all the seasons of Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Hulu, too. Love that show.
Right now I'm catching the few episodes I've missed of Leah Remini's Scientology show. Hulu has seasons 1 and 2.

I finished The Gate Keeper by Charles Todd, book #20 in their Ian Rutledge series. It was okay, I gave it three stars. I keep reading this series, but it's frustrating how the main character is so stuck in his post-war shell shock and the resulting isolation, and the authors never ever give him the slightest hope of a change or a real connection with another human.

I've been watching a Vermeer documentary on Amazon Prime in bits and pieces this weekend, and it's made me think of Girl with a Pearl Earring. I saw it years ago, but I'm thinking I'd like to see it again. Scarlett Johansson is one of my favorite actresses.

Yeah, I bought the Advent calendar a couple years ago and was really unimpressed. It seemed like a lot of the tea was more like fruit and spice infusions rather than real black or green tea. It all tasted really weak to me. Didn't even finish the Advent calendar!

My husband and I went out Thurs. night and hit Macy's. I was interested in some cookware they had on sale, decided against it, but discovered that the Bali bras I wear were 65% off, so I bought eight! And I got a great deal at Michael's on a couple packs of stretched canvases and a set of paintbrushes for my niece's Christmas present. She loves to paint.
Today we went to a fancier shopping center in Richmond and my husband got me a purse and wallet for 30% off at Fossil. I won't get to enjoy them till Christmas, though! And I got some Yankee candles for $5.
Everywhere we went was busy, but not nuts, and everyone was pleasant.

I thought of another place we liked...the Charles Hosmer Morse museum in Winter Park, a very cute town northeast of Orlando. If you like Tiffany glass, they have an outstanding collection. And it's just a neat town to walk around in, with older houses and shops. Nice and quiet change of pace from the Orlando tourist stuff.

I second the Dali museum. The big pink hotel is the Don Cesar. We stayed there a couple of times in the past - a great old Florida hotel. The Don Cesar is gorgeous but waaaay out of our budget! I'm jealous that you stayed. It had to be absolutely wonderful. I think the big pink hotel I went to was the Vinoy, in downtown St. Pete. The Don Cesar is over on the beach. I'd happily stay at either!

I really like St. Pete. They have a great little art museum and a Salvador Dali museum. There's a big pink Art Deco hotel whose name escapes me at the moment, and you can dine in their restaurant and it's delicious and fancy.

I'm watching Fixer Upper and they've done a paint color I very much like in a dining room. Is there any resource for paint colors they use in specific episodes? This one is season 5, episode 1.

I listened to the first 2 episodes while I was painting yesterday...I have more to do tomorrow, so I'll listen more then. I've been part of the Facebook group Sounds Like MLM But OK for over a year, and that's another fascinating place to hear about the shenanigans these companies and their people pull. And the Lularoe Defectives group on FB is just plain addictive. That company is one of the most predatory of all.
