It's going on a wall - across from the back of the sofa.
Thanks for all the thoughts and ideas. I'd like to put something there and not just hang art on the wall. It's around the corner from our back door and I'd like to have a 'landing strip' to drop mail, keys, etc. But because it's in the living room, I don't want to go fully practical with it and have hats and mitts inside... would prefer more decorative.
I think maybe I will start with a bit of everything (some books, some pottery, some baskets) and see if any one of those grabs me once we get it home and set up. I don't want to drop a lot of money on filling it and especially not if I'm not sold on what goes inside.
I don't have any collections today... but this may be a good reason to start one!

I love seeing your posts... they make me add places to my must see/must do list. I think Death Valley just landed on it. My grandparents are from Austria, so I'd also love to make it there... any more photos you'd care to share? hint hint. Or did the bad weather put a kibosh on your photography there?

I like the basket idea... if we can't come up with something decorative then the baskets will hide whatever junk winds up in there. We'll just need to search for narrow baskets. 9" isn't a lot of space for storage, but we want a narrow furniture piece there to keep the walkway unobstructed.

This will be on a wall in our living room, then about 3 feet of open space (i.e. a walkway), then the back of our sectional couch. I don't think anyone is really going to look inside, but I also don't want it to sit empty.
For what it's worth - we are going with a black paint finish rather than white, and the interior of the cabinet is black as well.

I haven't done one per day since I'm doing longer snippets (say 2-3 seconds or so each) but so far I have the balloon drop we do at midnight on New Year's Eve, my son playing hockey, all of us skating on the creek behind our house that froze over last week, the cats wrestling, me going for a run in the snow, the kids and their dad playing Trivia Crack (the refupeas got us hooked on that one).
I am trying to be mindful of taking varying videos for my winter montage. Last year's video, everything from Jan through early March was skating: hockey, outdoor skating, indoor public skating, my daughter's figure skating lesson, etc. It makes us look like all we do is skate! Which is totally not true. Trying to keep some variety in it this year.

We would have friends over after school, play, have dinner and cake, and open gifts. If we were lucky there was a loot bag. One year my sister's party was at the McDonald's caboose and I was sooooooo jealous. I'm 39.

We're looking at a piece of furniture that is quite a large cabinet, about 32" tall x 72" long, but only 9" deep. The cabinet has three sets of doors with chicken wire inserts, and there are 3 fixed shelves inside. In other words... Lots of space to display rather small and narrow objects. The furniture fits the space we want to fill but I am at a loss for what to keep inside. We have built in bookshelves, so books aren't an option unless we acquire a lot more. Suggestions? This will be in our living room. I figure the refupeas will know!

Unbelievable! I just want to throttle those people and say, "Is this yours? Did you pay for it?!" It seems like every time I go to the store, I see someone with a child in their cart, opening up a package of goldfish or crackers or chips that they just plucked from the grocery store shelf and blithely handing it to the kid for their snack. WTF?!? Until you buy it, it is the property of the grocery store! Seriously hate the entitlement mentality that seems to be everywhere these days. Lady, your kid can make it through the grocery store without a snack!! When my kids were younger, I did this all the time. I don't see the big deal. It was always never an item that was paid for by weight, but cheese sticks or crackers, no problem. As long as I pay for the item, what does it matter if it's already open? If that kept my kid from having a meltdown in the checkout line, it was worth it. I wouldn't eat an unwashed grape that is paid for by the pound.

Grocery shopping, I make a batch of muffins for school lunches, usually waffles for breakfast with extras into the freezer for the week, pack lunches for Monday, and make a make-ahead meal for Monday dinner (this week it's manicotti) since we have multiple activities on Monday nights.

Anyone know if Hattie will be back? I realize she's "off at college" but she's not even been mentioned lol She is supposed to show up in the final episode. i always wonder about quotes from the cast like Lauren Graham's above. I mean if she were dissatisfied with how her character ends, would she really come out and say so now?

I don't think anyone is going to die anymore. Jason Katims never outright said anyone was going to, he just discussed loss. And they have been exploring loss, in a way. I guess I don't think they'd kill a character in the last two episodes, with no time to process it. I hope I'm right. ETA: I think that Zeek and Camille are going to decide against the surgery, which will begin the grieving process for everyone, because the doctor was very clear that without it, his time is limited. But I don't think he's actually going to die in the final two episodes. Amber will have the baby, Sarah will get married and we will get glimpses of the future for everyone. And maybe there will be flash forwards without Zeek, but that's as close to death as I predict we will see in the final two shows. Totally all speculation, of course. Interesting. I hope you're right. Kind of a bittersweet, he's still here now but won't be for long. That would make a lot more sense than having some arbitrary family member die in a car accident or something like that.

If Zeke didn't die in the last couple of episodes, I can't even venture to guess who it's going to be, or how.

I find that TITS helps more than the shorts. Time in the saddle. Desensitizes the lady bits.

The Boardwalk walk we had was just as long as the AKL walk! We were in a room above Jellyrolls, and the walk to the refillable mug station at the other end of the resort was torture. Not that I can't handle a ten minute walk, but right after you come back from a hot sweaty park day and all you want is a nice cold Coke... last thing I felt like doing was heading out again to get one!

I hope my kids are never too old for the Santa photo. Don't think I will be so lucky though. This year, DS (9) was OK with going, but DD (7) didn't want to. I kind of forced her into it and once she got there, she was thrilled to chat with Santa. My kids still believe but both know that the mall Santa is not the real Santa. I don't know what will happen when they learn the truth. I will respect their wishes but will encourage them to keep taking the pictures. 34 years worth would be a hoot!

We stayed at Jambo House. It's a long walk from those rooms to the lobby at Jambo House, too. AKL is just a very spread out resort. We actually preferred the Kidani pool to the Jambo House one - smaller, but with a lovely kids' play area, and not as crowded. If you want to stay at AKL then I don't think Kidani is any worse off than Jambo House.

One more comment from me. One thing that did bother me about the Target here was the lack of selection relative to Target stores in the US, and the online shopping option that is not available to us here. The brick and mortar Target might have had a few options for a widget, but the online store always has tens if not hundreds. I could live with the lack of a brick and mortar store if I had access to the online store - that would be a tradeoff I'd be willing to make. US consumers are spoiled by the amount of selection they have.

I for one am soooo sad. I love Target. They don't have great prices on a lot of basics, but I love the Threshold household line, their holiday stuff, and they have some cute kids clothes. I was even looking forward to the Lilly Pulitzer line this spring. They are going to leave a huge hole in the strip mall across the street from my office. Zellers used to be there, and Target has been a huge improvement. Now, no more convenient place to pick up kitty litter and paper towels on my lunch hour. This part of town also has lots of senior citizens' complexes, thus lots of shoppers within walking distance, and the lack of a multi-purpose store with a grocery section will definitely be felt.

I actually think those are super cute. Of course they aren't meant for bad weather, and they wouldn't be even if the toe were covered; they're fabric and I would assume it's not waterproof. Some things in life are for fashion and some things in life are for function. There's room for both.

I am surprised that so many give/get rides to the airport. I am 90 minutes away from my closest airport, plus it involves crossing the border into the US. We always park long term and build enough time into our schedule to make sure we have time to park at the cheap lot and get a shuttle into the terminal, rather than parking in the pricey lot connected to the terminal. I would never dream of asking someone to drive me to the airport. To me, if you have the funds to travel, that includes budgeting for your parking fees. Different strokes for different folks I guess!

I am out already. I kept it up for a few days but ultimately I think doing 2-5 second clips of more significant events, rather than 1 second each day, is more my style, so I'm going to stick with that. I still plan to film a couple of times per week and I keep a running iMovie project that I add onto every couple of weeks so it's not overwhelming to edit at year's end.

Vote for Joe!This news story is local to me. They found Joe the cat on the side of the road with 17 pellets from a pellet gun lodged in his head. I don't think they ever found the perpetrator. Joe was rescued and is doing well now, though he lost an eye. Now he's been nominated for an award in the Modern Cat Star Cat Contest. If you'd like to, could you vote for Joe? Our whole community would love to see Joe win after all he's been through.

I eat it every day in the winter. I like steel cut oats on the weekend when I have time to cook them. I don't like the texture when reheated though so during the week I eat quick oats. Twice as much water as oats, cooks in a couple of minutes, top with brown sugar, pecans and dried fruit, usually cherries or raisins or apricots.
