the volume of water used to clean those rugs is shocking. i can't imagine that kind of water usage is going on in our drought stricken state but i'm sure it is. I swear, I must be seeing different videos. The ones I see saturate the rugs, but that is no where near a thousand gallons of water. Maybe 20, 50 tops! I have see some that put them inside a drum and spin, and some that lay them flat and squeegee/scrub - but none of those would use anything anywhere close to 'thousands of gallons' - unless your talking about cleaning 300 rugs.

It's amazing what they build nests with!
I see a lot of net wrap in the nests around here. We don't use net wrap on our bales, because that stuff is just the devil to deal with! We use plastic twine, which is also a pain in the butt. We started cutting the twine and pulling it off before the grinder comes to grind hay. It's an extra chore, but no more twine balls in the feed bunks, fields, and cattle guts!

Using thousands of gallons of water and chemicals to get them clean? If we are talking about the same videos - I am sure it is not thousands of gallons (per rug). Probably not even a hundred. I'd be surprised if it was even 50. I fill 1000 gallon stock tanks using a large diameter hose off a water truck - and 1000 gallons is a LOT of water, that takes a while to pump out of a 4" wide hose. I don't know that the 'chemicals' are even that much more than a detergent. Man it is satisfying watching them squeegee that dirty water out! LOL So my vote is throwing them out is worse for the planet. I got a wild hair and decided to shampoo my area rugs. I have three 10'x13' area rugs. Two in my living room and one in my dining room. I bought a carpet cleaning machine. These rugs are 20 plus years old, and have gone through raising 3 kids, on a farm. I don't have inside pets, but the dog was a frequent visitor. First I vacuumed very thoroughly, including flipping them over and vacuuming the backside. It's amazing what that knocked loose! LOL After I had them vacuumed really well, I bought some plastic sheeting and put that down underneath them. I have old hardwood floors and didn't want the dampened rugs ruining the floors. I think I did at least 4 or 5 rounds before I felt like the water was actually clean coming out of the machine. The first couple rounds. Oh my STARS! It was awful! I did keep these rugs vacuumed regularly! The strangest thing, was after letting them dry for a few days I vacuumed again. I was astonished how much dirt came out again. More light sand type, but geesh! My rugs are matching darker oriental patterned rugs - so I guess the dirt just didn't show that much. They did look way brighter after cleaning though. God it was a workout! I have no place in my area I could take the rugs to be professionally cleaned. One of my friends sent her off to the place that said they cleaned them, but when she got them back, they still had needles from her Christmas tree in them. LOL

I see the ads all the time!
I am such a cheap a$$ though, and my jeans just get ripped and beat up from working. So I stick with the Walmart jeans! lol They actually have some nice enough jeans. I get the store brand (Time & Tru or Terra & Skye for plus).
I also like the Sophia Vegara jeans and Levi jeans from Walmart. I usually have to get those online, since my WM doesn't carry a ton of styles. I really like them. I have a couple pairs of Pioneer Woman capri's. One has a lace trim at the hem, and I get tons of compliments on.

With CD's - pay attention to the maturity date. They can automatically renew - and you don't want that to happen. Keep a reminder of when the maturity date is.
I parked some extra in some higher yielding CD's this spring. I won't need the money until next year, so it was a good easy way for me to make a little extra on it. I think I have 5 days (might be a few more than that) at maturity to cash it in. Otherwise it rolls back into a new time period, with less favorable rates. Plus I will need the money for operating capital at that point.

Do you think they shrink at all? Minimally - but I find a medium is just tight on my foot. My foot is a little wider though, so that may play a part in it. I can't stand to have my toes crowded, so that is why I am so much happier with the large size. They don't pull hard on my toes when on, which is really awful if you run.

My oven is in use every day, at least once a day or more.
But I have been known to shove a dirty skillet in there, if I haven't gotten all my dishes done and someone stops by! LOL
I do put some heavy pans in there to fully dry after washing - if the oven is still warm. I set them in there to fully dry and put away when cool or the next time I peek in there.

Iowa here, and it has been an issue for many weeks now.
It even affect our crop growth. A deficient in photosynthesis can affect stalk strength in corn. Weaker stalks is one of the worst things that can happen with corn.
The haze is quite thick here today, but I know it is worse on the east side of the state.

Here is my perspective from having older parents. My Mom was 45 and my dad was 50 when I was born (to them, late in life baby).
My siblings were all older, closest was 10 years older, with other siblings quite a bit older. In many respects, it was just me growing up, as for about as long as I could remember my siblings had flown the nest. My parents had more time and money with me - so I got to do a lot of fun things. I never felt like I missed out on anything, since my Dad took me with him a lot and we played ball and went skiing, etc.
I also feel (oh heck, I know!) that my parents were way more lenient with me, as far as discipline. Maybe they were just tired, but I had far less rules to follow.
Down side; My dad died when I was 22. My Mom lived longer, but she really aged after my Dad died. Their health was really good right up until my Dad was diagnosed with cancer, and passed shortly after. The brunt of dealing with that went to my older siblings, but if it had just been me, dealing with that at 22 would have rocked my world. My parents were often mistaken for my grandparents. I found that mortifyingly embarrassing. I had friends who's parents were my siblings age. My cousins my age, were actually my first cousins once removed, since their parents were actually my cousins. It wasn't the end of the world, but it felt strange at times (when I was a dorky teen).
That really doesn't give you an answer, but I feel like only you could know how it will work for you.

I was a fairly picky eater, but loved what my Mom cooked. She wasn't much into casseroles, so I think that contributes to my not loving the so much.
When I make spaghetti, I never add the sauce to the pasta. Mix on your own plate if you want. Same for salads with dressing - dress on your plate.
I was lucky that my kids were never to picky with my food, but each one had a couple things they didn't care for, and I worked around it.
One thing that helped, was that I involved them in the planning, shopping, and preparation from a very early age. They seemed more willing to eat things they had actively participated in making.
They are fantastic cooks now and very adventurous eaters. Their friends always ask them how they know how to cook - it was just everyday life here. Same way they can all weld and set fence posts! lol

My dh is going to give it a try later with his hobby tools, but if he can't get it out I scheduled an appointment withe the Genius Bar for tomorrow.... because surely I'm not the first this has happened to? lol. If your DH didn't get it out, and the Genius Bar didn't fix it - take it to an independent cell phone fix-it shop. IMO, the Genius Bar wants you to buy new. A good reputable repair shop is more on your side.

I think last year was the first official federal holiday for it. It really doesn't even register in my area, which you can image is pretty much white, conservative, and rural. Bank is closed, and there is no mail. But that's it. My husband summed it up last year with "What is that?" - and I explained what the holiday represented. His reply was "Oh, OK".
We don't take it off. It's just like any other day in the summer - we will be working.
I was raised to 'celebrate' Memorial Day by attending memorial services for veterans and also going to the cemetery to put flags on the graves, then take them off later that evening, with my Dad who was a veteran.
Now living on the farm, end of May is still really busy, so the likelihood of taking anytime off is slim. We do try to get into the memorial service at the cemetery, but then it's back to work.

I write quite a few a month, but they are all for our farm/ranch. Quite a few business are check payment only, like feed, vet, etc. I pay for all our feeder calves by check. Hundreds of thousands of dollars. We buy the calves and usually send a check to the seller after we get the calves. But when we buy from a new ranch, we always give them our bankers phone number, so they can verify we have the funds to pay, as it can easily top $300K (and calves are WAY more expensive right now).
We pay our hired help by check also.
It works well for record keeping.

It's a different world, and people need to get over being pissy about getting asked for a receipt, or scanning their own items. I'm tired of people losing their minds over it.
I have been asked, and they were polite in their request - which I think is ESSENTIAL! I feel it is possible to make a mistake scanning, and I would much rather be asked politely if there might be a problem, than getting thrown to the ground over it.
I use Scan and Go, so I scan with my phone, place in a tote, and then just scan my phone at self-checkout. Boom, done, fast. I always make eye contact with the self checkout people and ask "Am I OK?" - they usually say "Yes" and call me by my name, since I used the app, they have my info. I just feel better about checking in with them, because although I try very hard to make sure I have done things right, mistakes happen. Once in a while, they will check an item that I have stowed below, just to make sure it was included. Perfectly fine.

Do people in hurricane or tornado areas have to have special insurance riders like this? Tornado area, and have had damages from a couple, and also some straight line wind that took out an entire building. State Farms response was to pay the claim and drop us.

Just wanted to pop in and say that the gender-neutral term for a niece or nephew is nibling and I love that so much! Interesting. I've always called young ones in my family "Niblets" - which are small kernels of corn.

I'm glad the school district did the right thing in banning the man, but that poor girl. She will never forget the hate she experienced that day. That poor child. You can never take back hurtful words, especially said to a child. How painful.

Extremely dry. DH has been sleepless over the lack of grass in pastures (it's going fast). Those that harvest hay said the first cutting was 2/3 of normal.
Last year we had timely rains that saved the crops. I mean TIMELY. We actually had a very good harvest.
We had some rains this spring that have brought the crops up, but we really need significant moisture now. DH is in 'protect' mode. We prescription plant our row crops, and he went very light on sandy areas (we need corn to produce an ear, to make feed - if they are too close, and drought stressed - no corn).
The subsoil moisture is non-excitant. Nothing. That is an indicator that we are in trouble.
I know there is a weird weather pattern. Jet Stream, El Nino, La Nina ..
Much weather has come at us from East to West or South East to North West - which is weird. That is due to a big high pressure over northern Canada.

Until I retired I worked in insurance. When I first heard this idea to require insurance I started pondering why? What would people expect it to do? I couldn’t come with a scenario where requiring insurance would change much. So what am I missing? It might stop some people from making a purchase. If the insurer would not issue coverage, then no gun. But there are so many ways to purchase guns, I don't know how it could work.

I think there should be insurance on owning guns, to be able to purchase them. Just like insuring your car.
I am a responsible gun owner, but there has to be something done to stop these shootings.
Behavior has changed, not just for those using firearms in terrible situations.
I don't know if it our online culture or what has made things change so drastically. I have seen several comments lately in my small town area about younger kids and their language at places like the park and swimming pool. Constant F Bombing, etc. I can have a pretty salty tongue, but I do not use that language around general situations. But boy do I hear it.

I lived in Iowa when the plane crashed there. There was sonic boom then. It's something I will never forget, but so hard to explain. What/where plane crash was that? Sonic Booms where somewhat a normal part of our life out here in Western Iowa. We were directly under the flight path of Iowa Air Guard when they did practice maneuvers. That wing has since been changed to a Drone unit, but occasionally a wing out of Sioux City does some maneuvers over us. A Sonic Boom is more rare now, but it always gets my attention. My windows rattle and the livestock spooks a bit. Many times it was a BOOM-BOOM - with two booms. You could see them dog fighting, if it was a clear day (or even better at night!) They would fire tracers and you could see the smoke from them during the day, or fire at night. Best was when they lit afterburners at night! But in the DC area, I could see how it would be quite alarming. So sad for the pilot and passengers. Of course there are those that are sure it is a conspiracy of some sorts, because the plane owner is a big Trump supporter. Just tragic. The woman wasn't actually their daughter, but more of an adult "adopted" daughter (which is absolutely family!)
