I don’t know why, but the right one makes me think more of a vampire, not a bat.

The perfect storm of crappy reasons collided when I married my ex. I’d been on my own for 10 years before moving in with my parents so that I could afford to do my student teaching and switch careers. Meanwhile, I was teaching 2 nights a week at a college and working every other night and the whole weekend at a department store. I was so tired and not thinking clearly. My parents, especially my mother, were driving me crazy, treating me as if I were 15, not 28. She was also nagging me about getting older and all her friends’ daughters being married and her wanting grandkids. My ex was a bad boy student in one of my night classes (same age—I wasn’t totally crazy) so there was the element of being rebellious, too.
At the door of the church as we were about to walk down the aisle, my father turned to me and stated, “You know you don’t have to do this. We can turn around and call it off.” My answer: “Yes, but Mom would kill us because she’d be embarrassed.” He agreed. So, when I’m feeling really snarky, I remind my mother that the ultimate reason I married my ex was to let her have her fairytale wedding day to make up for her own.

Just ordered it and would love to read along. I teach an African-American Lit course (yes, a white woman, as my students are often shocked to learn) as well as lots of AA lit in my generic American Lit course. I hope this book might help me to move discussions along without feeling sometimes awkward.

DS is more liberal than DH and I are, but essentially we are all on the same page. I’m a registered Republican because otherwise I couldn’t vote in a primary in my district; DH is registered as an independent, and we think DS is too but it’s just not come up. All of us loathe Trump.
My parents both voted for Trump while holding their noses as, according to my dad, “I would vote for the Devil over Hillary.” However, at this point, they will be voting Democratic as long as the party doesn’t run Hillary again. My in-laws, on the other hand, have apparently drunk the Trump Kool-Aid. Since I’m convinced my MIL is a closet racist (despite our biracial child), it’s easy to understand why she thinks Trump is so great. She terrified of the Mexicans for absolutely no reason other than their skin tone.

Is it possible it’s their last name? I suppose it's possible, but it seems highly unlikely. Especially if they are Asian, it looks like it might be, or at least it might mean something in their language.

When I was younger, I was such a voracious reader that I finished everything. However, since I was spending proportionally more per physical book than I do now with all the freebies online, I no longer feel the guilt about wasting money if I give up on a book. If I realize that I’m searching for ANYTHING else to do other than finish a book, it’s time to chuck it.

Don’t watch many foreign language films, but when I do, I prefer subtitles. However,I like actually waxing the acting, and having to read the dialogue takes away from that.

As part of an interview team, I had a weird teaching demonstration several years back. The applicant, a male, had apparently used the restroom just before he started his demo and forgotten to zip his fly. Throughout the whole 20 minute lesson, he repeatedly shoved his hands in his pockets, spreading his fly wide open.
The whole team spent the demo desperately trying NOT to look below his chest . . . But it was just impossible.

they are outsourcing - and closing down a bunch of stores my DH will be devastated - and probably stockpile gina Men wearing Crocs is grounds for divorce I tease DH that all he has to do to get me all hot and bothered is to wander through the house wearing only his boxers, a t-shirt and his big ole clown shoes (Crocs). It just doesn’t have the same effect without those holey rubber shoes.

We didn’t hug very much when I was growing up until I fell in with buddies in high school who were huge huggers and converted the whole family. That became my new norm. As a result, DH and I hug constantly and raised DS the same way. He has no problem hugging EVERYONE, making sure to give my tiny little mother a huge bear hug every time he sees her. While he’s 20 now, he apparently missed the cool side hug phase of teenagehood.

I did LASIK 15 years ago when I was already in bifocals. Since then, I’ve bought cheap cheaters for reading and computer. However, at 58, my vision is now getting a bit fuzzy at distance as well, and I’m tired of the constant on-off with the cheaters while I’m teaching. So, I’ve just made an appt. with the optometrist to see about getting bi or trifocals.
At least I got 15 years of being able to walk around without glasses and still not walk into walls. I only wish that I could have had the surgery done earlier!

The only reason I stay registered as a Republican is so that I can vote in primaries for the region and state. My portion of Florida is SOLIDLY and overwhelmingly conservative, so there is no question, really, of Democrat or Republican, but of moderate Republican or Bible-thumping, Confederate monument saving, Trump-humping Republican.
Yet another reason I can’t wait to retire and move.

The best beaches are in the Panhandle. I would never consider living in Orlando which feels more like a huge tourist destination than a home. DS goes to UCF and loves it, but doesn’t love Orlando, even though he likes heat far more than I do. It’s hot, humid, doesn’t have a real Florida feel. If you want that area, Tampa, New Port Richey, etc are much better choices. I love St. Pete, but it’s EXPENSIVE!

DH and I did just 3 shelves at the beginning of the summer and filled up our big green monster trash can twice. I had over 20 boxes of expired cake mix! It seems I am just programmed to always buy whenever there’s a BOGO at Publix. I’m trying to train myself now to put one in the pantry and the other goes to my college’s food bank for students.
We still have 2/3 of the pantry to go, but we’ve been chipping away at it instead of doing a massive cleaning out project.
Next stop, bathroom cabinets!

Maybe you could lend me $3000 of it to get my grandson, who has a broken nose and doesn't sound like himself, out of jail. Make sure you send it in Walmart gift cards . . . As my mother was ready to do to get my son out on bail.

DS and DH play the same PS4 game online several times a week, chatting with headsets on. At the end of every session, I quickly get on to hear DS’s voice. Other than that, we generally call him once a week to get a more in-depth conversation. And he frequently texts questions (how do I cook X? Which of these sketches do you like better?) to me during the week. We have no set schedule because it hasn’t been necessary.
I was also influenced by DH’s stories of his mother’s daily calls to his sister the whole time sis was in college. It sounded so over the top intrusive and hovering that I swore I would never be like that.

Lotion alone, unless it’s prescription, doesn’t knock down a flare up for me. I try to take a Benadryl, put on some cream that includes vitamin E, and go to bed. Covering the area so that I can’t scratch it also helps. I have to break the itch cycle internally and externally.

I love to crochet, but struggle to figure out what to make since I live in Florida—not much call for gloves and warm scarves around here.
So, I’ve been thinking about donating items to charities that need specific items. Can the all-knowing Peas give some suggestions of reputable charities that might fit the bill?

Mine is in an alcove above the wall oven. My range top is a downdraft ventilation type in my island, so no way would it work. However, even if the kitchen were remodeled, I wouldn’t want it over the range. Every one I’ve ever seen/used over the range is matched with a loud, inefficient vent that drives me crazy. I would however LOVE to have a range hood over my island!

I have recurring dreams about remarrying my first husband. The most recent versions I have married him three times and he turns up again. I do not typically remember my dreams. The next day it flashed through my mind, and I actually screamed. Threw my dog for a loop, I tell ya! Oh I dream this, too! I'm back married to him and I wake up really upset! I have a version of this one as well. In it, somehow my divorce wasn’t legal, so I’m forced into living with the jackass jerk and can’t even contact my husband. I’m so frustrated and pissed when I wake up.
